It was an up-and-down game for the Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner. He was dominant at the plate, but struggled in the field, leading to Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly defending Turner.
In the game, Turner hit two home runs, bringing him to 200 for his career. He also hit a double and drove in five runs. Still, Turner committed his 15th error of the season and struggled on multiple other defensive plays, something he addressed after the contest, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“Just a ridiculous game in general by me,’’ Turner said. “I’m just happy we got the win. Just roller-coaster, up, down, up, down. You know you do things like that or have games like that, and sometimes have just got to laugh about it. If you can’t laugh at yourself, then you’re kind of done for. So, yeah, it’s good.”

It was his 14th home run of the season, just one fewer than he hit all of last season. In recent years he has been a consistent 20 home run a season hitting, reaching that mark in each year from 2021 through 2024, before having just 15 in 2025. Still, he now has 200 in his career, a mark he was excited to reach.
“I don’t think early in my career anybody thought I would hit 200 homers,’’ Turner said. “So, it’s kind of cool from an evolution standpoint of where I was when I was younger, and what kind of hitter I was, to being able to do that at the highest level.”
The Phillies are now 56-45 on the season, placing them in second place in the NL East. They also control the second wild card spot in the National League. The Phillies will play their second game of a three-game series with the Dodgers on Tuesday night.
