Authorities have revealed new details about the fatal car accident that resulted in the death of Godzilla vs. Kong actress Kaylee Hottle.
Hottle’s father, Joshua Hottle, previously confirmed to TMZ that his daughter was killed following a car crash in Maryland. He told the outlet that he learned Hottle was involved in a serious car accident on Tuesday morning, and she died en route to a hospital.
According to a release from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Hottle died in a single-vehicle collision in the 11400 block of Windsor Road in Ijamsville, Md., in which she was a passenger.
Deputies and personnel from the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call on Tuesday at approximately 2:52 a.m., and a preliminary investigation revealed that an unnamed 19-year-old Frederick man was driving a 1995 Honda Accord when he traveled off the right side of the two-lane roadway and struck a culvert.
The release shared that two passengers were also in the vehicle with the driver at the time of the collision, one being Hottle. She was transported from the scene to an area trauma center, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The other passenger declined medical treatment at the scene, while the driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision, per the release.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit. They ask that anyone with information related to the accident to please contact Dfc. Rose at 301-600-1046.
Hottle, a deaf actress best known for her role as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, got her onscreen start thanks to an appearance in a 2017 ad for the ASL translation app Convo.
She made her feature film debut in Godzilla vs. Kong alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González, and Rebecca Hall playing Jia, the orphan who forms a bond with King Kong through sign language. Jia is the adoptive daughter of Hall’s character Dr. Ilene Andrews, who takes her in after meeting her on Skull Island.
Hall, Henry, and Hottle reprised their roles for 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a senior, paid tribute to the late actress in a statement on social media. “It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland,” the school wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”
The statement added, “At this time, we have very limited information and ask that everyone respect the privacy of Kaylee’s family and refrain from sharing or speculating about the circumstances surrounding the accident."
