The NFL‘s financial strength reached another milestone in 2025, but the league’s latest revenue figures also led to criticism from fans. According to Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, the league generated roughly $14.5 billion in gross national revenue during the 2025 season.
Each of the NFL’s 32 teams received more than $450 million in gross national revenue. That marked a roughly five percent increase from 2024, with media rights, sponsorships, royalties, and shared revenue driving the growth. Teams also collected nearly $30 million each from shared gate receipts.

Additionally, Sportico reported the per-team national payout exceeded the combined league distributions received by NBA, MLB, and NHL franchises.
Fans, however, questioned how the league continues generating record revenue while costs rise for viewers.
A fan said, “The fines on the players are barbaric to say the least. Greedy management.”
Another fan pointed toward the growing number of broadcast partners, saying, “Yea, because they forced you to sign up for 10 diff tv providers every sunday to watch a game.”
A third fan criticized the league’s financial priorities, writing, “And they’ll continue to attempt to ruin the sport because $14.5B simply isn’t enough for them.”
One user wrote, “Yet there are no guaranteed contracts, no mandatory grass fields in every stadium, and no lifetime Healthcare for players.”
A user reacted, saying, “We’re still gonna be seeing ads on jerseys in 2-3 years, get ready.”
A sixth fan said, “And they charge the most for food and drink. Greed.”
The expectations from 2026 NFL season
The NFL will enter the 2026 season from another position of strength. Last season, Seattle won Super Bowl LX after a 14-3 season, while Matthew Stafford captured his first NFL MVP award with 46 touchdown passes.
The upcoming season will feature several international games, including the league’s first regular-season game in Australia. Patrick Mahomes is expected back from injury, while top draft pick Fernando Mendoza headlines an exciting rookie class.
The league’s business strategy remains highly effective. Broadcast partners continue paying premium prices because football consistently delivers unmatched television audiences.
Still, fan frustration deserves attention. Many viewers now need multiple streaming services and television packages to follow every game. That creates a growing barrier, even as league revenues continue setting records. Player fines have also become a recurring talking point.
Sportico’s report added that league executives expect annual revenue growth of at least six percent. Meanwhile, the NFL views its 2029 media rights opt-out clauses as a major opportunity before current agreements expire in 2033.
