The New York Mets may or may not make big names such as infielder Bo Bichette and shortstop Francisco Lindor available to advertised contenders ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
That said, it sounds like Mets outfielder Luis Robert Jr. will spend at least the next week or so auditioning for would-be buyers.
Luis Robert Jr. "generating preliminary interest" ahead of trade deadline
"Mets center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who just returned from the injured list Monday after missing more than two months with a spine issue, is generating preliminary interest from multiple teams," Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic shared on Wednesday morning. "After Aug. 3, Robert, 28, is owed $5.9M (plus a $2M buyout on a $20M club option for 2027). It’s unclear yet if the Mets hold any interest in paying down any of Robert’s remaining salary. The answer could, at least somewhat, depend on Robert’s performance."
The Mets acquired Robert from the Chicago White Sox this past January, and he has mostly been a disappointment during what could go down as a short-lived tenure with the organization. According to Baseball Reference, he slashed .213/.314/.315 with a .628 OPS, two home runs and eight RBI across his first 25 games of the season. During Tuesday's 4-0 win at the Milwaukee Brewers, he went 1-for-5 with a home run.
Where could the Mets trade Luis Robert Jr.?
According to Rosenthal and Sammon, the Philadelphia Phillies and "a handful of teams" are "looking for right-handed hitting outfield help, especially in center field." While it's unknown what the Mets would need to receive to send Robert to a rival, the harsh truth of the matter is that a New York team that began Wednesday with a record of 43-59 can't afford to be picky and should accept the best offer possible for those who will be part of the club's latest fire sale.
"Mets interim manager Andy Green said the plan for Robert includes him playing two out of every three days and in center field," Rosenthal and Sammon added.
Thus, Robert should receive multiple opportunities to impress other clubs through at least the end of July.
