Known for its serene river landscapes, beautiful coastal towns and rich music scene, Mississippi is one of Americans’ most searched retirement destinations in the country, according to a new study.
The study by Mirador Living, a discovery platform for senior living communities, used Google Search data to find which states Americans are most interested in for retirement.
Here’s what the study found.
Why Mississippi?
The Magnolia State ranked Americans’ second-most searched state in the country for retirement, the Mirador Living Study found.
According to a 2025 Allianz Annual Retirement study, many Americans are concerned with the following when deciding on retirement destinations:
- Rising costs
- Potential financial losses
- Impact of extreme weather or natural disasters
The state had a total Google Search volume of 46,450 and 1,359.04 searches per 10 million people, according to the Mirador Living study.
“Retirees now prioritize affordable living, quality healthcare, and a lifestyle that nurtures both physical and mental well-being,” Dharam Khalsa, senior living expert and CEO and co-founder of Mirador Living, said in a July 17 news release. “These emerging preferences indicate that factors such as cost of living, access to top-tier medical facilities, and community vitality are playing increasingly important roles in retirement decisions.”

These are Americans’ top 10 most searched for states for retirement, and their searches per capita, according to the Mirador Living study:
1. Tennessee: 1,383.91 searches per 10 million people
2. Mississippi: 1,359.04
3. Florida: 1,306.38
4. Alabama: 1,282.97
5. South Carolina: 1,240.55
6. Arkansas: 1,215.68
7. Pennsylvania: 1,214.21
8. Kentucky: 1,209.83
9. Idaho: 1,135.22
10. Arizona: 1,123.51
What countries are Mississippians most interested in for retirement?
These are the top five countries Mississippi residents searched for retirement, according to the Mirador Living study:
1. Canada
2. Mexico and Portugal (tie)
4. Panama and Spain (tie)
How did Mirador Living rank states?
Researchers at Mirador Living analyzed Google Search data to find which states Americans were the most interested in for retirement destinations, according to the study. Total search volume across all 50 states was normalized per 10 million residents, researchers said.
