Kaylee Hottle, the child star best known for her appearances in "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," has died at the age of 18. Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the tragic news in a live stream shared on Facebook. Communicating via American Sign Language, Joshua confirmed that his daughter died in a car accident early in the morning on July 21 in Maryland and that had to fly from Texas to the East Coast to claim her body.
Kaylee Hottle played Jia, an orphaned Iwi girl who shared a special bond with Kong, in the newest Monsterverse movies. Jia represented one of the most meaningful characters in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as the bridge between humanity and monsters. Both the character and Hottle herself were deaf. Hottle actually hails from a family that has multiple generations of deaf individuals, bringing much-needed representation to the mainstream. The world has lost a young talent with immense potential now extinguished.

Hottle fought for greater deaf representation in Hollywood
Kaylee Hottle was born in 2007 to an all-deaf family. Hottle began acting on commercials as well as the informational project "10 Deaf Children: One Powerful Message, which saw 10 children, including Hottle, signing about their hopes for the future while raising awareness for better inclusion.
Hottle's first movie role was in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as Jia. Among all of the impressive VFX and giant monster battles, Jia steals every scene she's in. She has some of the best scenes in "Godzilla vs. Kong" and brings much-needed deaf representation to a big-budget production. Speaking with Junkee, she shared, "I think that it's important having deaf actors plays deaf characters because deaf people are aware of their own language and they're more familiar with the culture."
Her co-stars, Alexander Skarsgård and Rebecca Hall, even learned sign language to speak with Hottle outside of filming. Skarsgård sung her praises to Junkee as an up-and-coming talent, saying, "She's so professional ... There's so much going on on her face, her expression and the subtleties of that is fascinating to watch."
Hottle returned as Jia in 2024's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," which blew everyone away at the box office and earned Hottle a Saturn Award nomination for best younger performer in a film. She also appeared on an episode of the new "Magnum P.I." Her death is a terrible occurrence, and our hearts go out to Hottle's family at this time.
