It was a busy Monday night for Lacey Fire District 3. Here's what happened

Lacey Fire District 3 responded to three calls for structure fires within one hour Monday night. No injuries were reported, although one property was damaged by the flames.

Fire Chief Jennifer Schmidt said Tuesday firefighters received a call for a structure fire in the 7600 block of Pacific Avenue in Lacey at 9:24 p.m. on Monday.

Smoke was coming from a corner bathroom in a one-story fourplex, Schmidt said.

Nine response units were dispatched to the scene, according to Schmidt. Firefighters located the flames in the corner bathroom and extinguished them shortly after an initial search.

Damage was limited to the single bathroom and no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, although Schmidt said common fire incidents in bathrooms come from mishaps with electric appliances, outlets or ventilation systems.

Pacific Avenue was temporarily closed in both directions near the structure fire, Schmidt said, but that the area returned to normal within an hour.

Schmidt said Lacey Fire District 3 responded to two, less-severe incidents before addressing the structure fire on Pacific Avenue.

First, crews received calls at 8:47 p.m. for a residential structure fire in the 4600 block of 43rd Avenue in Lacey. Schmidt said firefighters saw the house filled with a light, hazy smoke. These crews determined the smoke to be coming from above the home’s microwave and removed the malfunctioning equipment.

Schmidt said there were no injuries and described this incident as a “more minor situation” compared to the structure fire on Pacific Avenue.

After that call, Lacey Fire District 3 responded to reports of a commercial structure fire on the 5200 block of Yelm Highway at 8:53 p.m. Callers said there was smoke in the building, according to Schmidt, but that any haze had dissipated when crews arrived on scene.

Firefighters determined a malfunctioning HVAC unit to be responsible for the smoke and removed it, she said.

Schmidt emphasized that Lacey Fire District 3 was able to respond to these three incidents rapidly due to the help of other local law enforcement, including Olympia and Lacey police.
