The trailer has just been released for Apollo Has Fallen, the upcoming spinoff series in the Has Fallen franchise.
Created by Howard Overman, Apollo Has Fallen continues the action saga after the events of Paris Has Fallen, the first TV show spinoff. Ritu Arya and Tewfik Jallab are back as Zara Taylor and Vincent Taleb, respectively. While Gerard Butler may not be the face of the franchise right now, he's still involved behind the scenes as an executive producer.
StudioCanal has shared a first look at Apollo Has Fallen, which will stream on Hulu in the United States, Prime Video in the UK and Canal+ in France, though a premiere date has not been announced yet. The official trailer teases the latest chapter.
MI6 Agent Zara and former protection officer Vincent come face-to-face with brutal mercenaries, led by leader Yuri Mishkin, and a deadly virus that could wipe out Europe's population. Throughout their new mission, which takes them from Libya to Spain, they realize that trust is hard to find, as betrayals and conspiracies take over their lives. The trailer begins with Zara telling Vincent to "gear up" because they've got a new job. The Voltov mercenary group has taken over Libya, and Zara has been tasked with monitoring their activities. When a plane goes down after potentially being shot at, everyone goes into overdrive to find and take out the enemies.
Zara realizes that the mercenary leader is trying to develop a biological weapon, and she suits up to protect herself from the dangers she might encounter. A virus will be let loose at a soccer stadium, with thousands of innocent spectators in the stands ready to cheer on their favorite teams. If Mishkin is successful in this first step, then he plans to expand the mission and "watch Europe collapse."
The MI6 agent makes another shocking discovery: Voltov has managed to get one of his own undercover at the foreign intelligence agency. Zara's life is now in more danger than ever before, as Mishkin makes it clear he wants her to be taken out. The trailer ends with several action-packed shots of the agents and mercenaries going toe-to-toe against each other, and several bombs exploding all over the place.
The franchise began with 2013's Olympus Has Fallen, which stars Butler as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who attempts to save President Benjamin Asher after the White House comes under attack. The movie grossed $170.3 million but received mixed reviews and a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The financial success of Olympus Has Fallen led to a sequel being greenlit by the studio. London Has Fallen performed even better at the box office, grossing $205.7 million, but was widely panned by critics and earned a 28% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Butler reprised the role of Mike Banning a third time for 2019's Angel Has Fallen, which ended up being the lowest-grossing installment in the franchise at $146.6 million and a 38% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
There are plans for more theatrical Has Fallen sequels, but in recent years, the franchise has expanded with the TV show Paris Has Fallen, which introduced Arya's Zara and Jallab's Vincent. Both actors are returning for the eight-episode Apollo Has Fallen. Their co-stars are Jacek Koman, Richard Dormer, Charlotte Spencer, Arthur Darvill, Annabel Scholey and Aylin Tezel.
