Known as “The Falls,” a Connecticut home designed by the architect behind the renovation of the Guggenheim Museum is for sale.
Located at 23 Mauwee Brook Road in Kent, modernist architect Charles Gwathmey designed the home and it was later upgraded in collaboration with the designer of the World Trade Center Memorial, Michael Arad.
According to its realtor, the current owners purchased the home in 2002 and consider themselves the stewards of the home. It was featured in the Wall Street Journal for the work they did on the home, including making it wheelchair accessible. It’s known for its crisp geometric forms, living spaces and attention to dramatic natural surroundings that Gwathmey frequently uses.
Consisting of four bedrooms and over five bathrooms, the home stretches over 5,400 square feet and sits on 41 acres of land. The land is deep in the Connecticut woods and the home has unobstructed views of the Litchfield Hills. The home has a natural planted roof along with an 8-acre Deborah Nevins-designed garden, a waterfall, walking paths, tennis court, pool and spa and a stone terrace.
The interior of the home was designed by Stephen Sills, “who selected elements that harmonize with Gwathmey’s modernist vision. These include custom finishes that enhance the home’s distinctive curved walls and glass-covered corridors,” according to its realtor.

Arad designed the new primary suite, which has an office and “captivating vistas,” according to its listing. It also has an ensuite bathroom with a soaking tub and shower. Two additional bedrooms have built-ins and their own bathrooms. There is also a private guest suite with a large walk-in shower, office, sitting room and its own private entry.
“All of this, creates one of the most gorgeous estates in Litchfield County,” according to its listing.
