A investigation is underway after a body washed ashore at La Jolla Shores on Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the popular San Diego beach at approximately 9:30 a.m. after receiving a call from a bystander who spotted an unresponsive person floating in roughly two feet of water near the shoreline.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department personnel and ocean lifeguards quickly retrieved the individual from the shallow surf. Medical personnel pronounced the person deceased at the scene. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the victim’s age, gender, identity, or apparent cause of death.
The San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office have assumed control of the investigation to determine how the individual entered the water and whether foul play was involved.
"It is currently an active investigation, and additional details will be made public once the Medical Examiner completes an initial assessment and next of kin are notified," officials noted in a brief statement.

The tragic event stands in stark contrast to the location's world-renowned reputation. Earlier this year, La Jolla Cove earned top honors after being named the No. 1 beach in the United States by TripAdvisor, celebrated globally for its dramatic coastline, seals, and crystal-clear waters.
Authorities are asking anyone who was in the area of La Jolla Cove early Wednesday morning and may have seen anything unusual to contact the San Diego Police Department.
