When it comes to action cinema, the '80s packed a serious punch. It served as a golden era for the genre with high-octane blockbusters defining the period by pairing muscular icons with explosive practical effects. Driven by Hollywood heavyweights like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, the decade birthed countless masterpieces, including The Terminator, Commando, and Rambo: First Blood, before evolving to embrace the everyday heroism of Bruce Willis in Die Hard. One classic emerged in between, helping to bridge the gap by combining action spectacle with a grounded – and highly relatable – protagonist.
The middle ground masterpiece maintained the gritty, violent stakes typical of '80s action cinema (complete with brutal murders, high-speed chases, and intense shootouts) but significantly defused the tension with comedy, hailing from its lead character: Axel Foley. Beverly Hills Cop introduced audiences to the Detroit detective, played by Eddie Murphy, in 1984, four years before John McClane blasted onto screens. Foley broke the mold, relying on his wits, street smarts, and fast-talking humor to survive the criminal underbelly of Beverly Hills, California, where he ran a rogue investigation into the murder of his childhood best friend.

Beverly Hills Cop cemented Murphy as a global superstar, proving that not every action hero needed a towering muscular physique to be effective. It was a triumph from the moment it debuted in theaters on Dec. 5, 1984, as audiences turned out in droves to see Foley in action. The film garnered strong reviews, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and stayed number one at the box office for an impressive 13 weeks straight, pulling in $234.8 million from theaters in the United States and Canada alone. It became a massive cultural touchstone and ended up being the launchpad for a whole new franchise.
The most recent installment, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, premiered on Netflix in 2024 and instantly became one of the platform's most successful summer movies. The legacy sequel followed the release of Beverly Hills Cop II in 1989 and Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994, meaning it arrived 30 years after the last entry, but the enthusiasm for the franchise clearly hadn't diminished, as viewers tuned in in massive numbers to watch Foley reunite with classic characters played by Judge Reinhold and John Ashton. While there is no Beverly Hills Cop 5 in the immediate future, there is a new release coming that promises to revive the series.
Paramount Home Entertainment is preparing a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook for the original Beverly Hills Cop, packaged with a standard Blu-ray and Digital 4K in addition to the 4K UHD. The movie has been remastered under the supervision of director Martin Brest, who also provides a commentary track as a bonus feature on the discs. The premium release is scheduled to arrive on the market on Aug. 11, 2026, giving physical media enthusiasts the opportunity to expand their Beverly Hills Cop collections, while the franchise is – once again – on hiatus, as plans for a fifth film appear to be on the back burner for the time being.
