Minnesota Vikings training camp begins next week, and while it serves as a proving ground for most players, there are a couple of players who stand to gain more than others.
Whether it's a fierce position battle or a career crossroads, the players below have a lot to prove to not only gain a roster spot but also change the narrative on their entire career. Some may make the roster regardless, but their impact on the 2026 Vikings can influence their future in 2027 and beyond.
Here are three Vikings with something to prove in 2026.

J.J. McCarthy, QB
It's tempting to go off the beaten path here, but how McCarthy handles the quarterback competition, before, during, and after the decision, is among the most fascinating storylines not just in Minnesota, but throughout the entire NFL this offseason. The former 10th overall pick underperformed in 2025 both on and off the field, dealing with injuries, inconsistencies, and Internet memes. If he surprises everyone and wins the starting job, it will be a testament to the work ethic we heard about heading into the draft. But if he loses the quarterback battle, will he embrace a backup role or try to force a trade for a fresh start elsewhere?
Kyler Murray, QB
Again, it's tempting to go off-script here, but Murray, too, has a ton to prove in 2026. Even though he's a heavy favorite to win the starting job at quarterback, there are no guarantees he will ever return to his Pro Bowl form from earlier in his career. Kevin O'Connell has operated an offense completely different from any Murray has ever been in. Will O'Connell tailor the offense to Murray? Or will the coach expect Murray to fit into an offense that has benefitted other veteran quarterbacks such as Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, and Carson Wentz?
Tai Felton, WR
Had the Vikings not fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, maybe Felton's spot on the roster would have been safe regardless of where he landed on the depth chart. But the 2025 third-round pick made a minimal impact as a rookie, catching only three passes for 25 yards. Minnesota signed Jauan Jennings this offseason, solidifying their top three receiver spots. Felton will battle for a roster spot with Myles Price, whose roster spot is probably secure because of his special teams ability, and UDFA Dillon Bell, who got plenty of reps with Murray during OTAs. At best, Felton would be the team's fourth receiver, which would be an ideal outcome for him. But if he can't fend off Bell or Price, Felton could be a surprise cut this preseason.
