20 Of The Weirdest Things People Actually Spent Money On For Their Weddings

From owls and Renaissance fair trolls to helicopters and weather witches, things get downright bizarre.

Weddings are ungodly expensive these days. While some couples are scaling back, others are clearly scaling up. After reading about wedding witches, people who make big bank casting sunny-day spells, I wondered what other odd things disillusioned lovebirds spend their money on.

My curiosity naturally brought me to the depths of Reddit, specifically threads like r/weddingplanning and r/BigBudgetBrides. Some splurges are mega pricey and others are downright bizarre, but wow. My oh my. I sure hope $50,000 invites and donkeys with beer made the day extra special. To each their own, I guess.

Here are 23 of the wildest things people splurged on for their weddings, according to the depths of the internet:

1.“I splurged on the favors. We found a guy on Etsy who makes awesome candles. He has exclusive rights to the smells of Disneyland, so we did 100 Haunted Gingerbread and 100 Pumpkin King (theme was Nightmare Before Christmas). With shipping, it came to around $1,400.”

2.“My wedding had a rescue kitten petting hour, the 501st legion of Star Wars cosplayers, a tattoo artist, make-your-own flower crowns, and a 50-foot video wall playing glam rock music videos.”

—AbaloneHo

3.“I want to surprise Future Husband and our guests with one of the Washington Nationals' Racing Presidents busting in during the reception. I asked him who his favorite Racing President is, and he said, 'George. First in the nation, first in my heart.’ Thankfully, he's much cheaper than Teddy!”

4.“I paid an Etsy witch the Monday before my Saturday wedding, lmao. It literally had a 100% chance of rain and storms forecasted for the whole day on our wedding day, but it stopped raining at the venue before our first look, and all the rain missed us for the rest of the day.”

5.“I budgeted over $50,000 on paper invites, simply because for the invitation alone, I am collaborating with a stippling artist to make 10 original stippling artworks for the invite. Then, I make a print of the 10 of the original designs (total 200), then I hand them to the stationery company to be customized further (wrappings, envelopes, etc.).”

6.“My husband entered our ceremony with his best man via helicopter. Even people who weren’t at our wedding will comment on how cool that is.”

7.“We're hiring Renaissance fair troll characters to walk around during cocktail hour. I think the kiddos will love it!”

8.“We spent about $400,000 on musical talent, including some big-name artists, which was the hit of our wedding. We spent about $150,000 to make sure the talent looked and sounded good. I would not skimp on this. We also had fun things like Co2 cannons.”

9.“We paid $350 to have donkeys in flower harnesses deliver beer to our guests during cocktail hour.”

10.“I'm renting a 1960s camper van photo booth for $1,200. I know that's wild, I just love the camper van so much and plan to use the van itself as a prop in our photos.”

11.“We got cows to hang out with the guests (if they chose to come over). Apparently, the cows love violin music, so we’re thinking of hiring a violinist for the ceremony.”

—Dansii

12."While planning our wedding, we realized we wanted Hat Boy and Daisy to be a part of the ceremony. We also invited our entire theater troupe and considered having our wedding officiated entirely by puppets. Our wedding parties would be made up of puppets and our closest puppeteer friends. In lieu of gifts, we've asked everyone to purchase high-quality puppets to use during our wedding. Everyone could realistically expect to spend $150-$500."

13."At my wedding, you walked up to a wall of greenery, rang a bell, and several gloved hands pushed through from the other side with a freshly poured glass of champagne. There were at least two caterers on the other side all night, and their only job was to hand out glasses of bubbly, but only through the creepy wall."

—nycbaker

14.“We love Squishmallows, so we had a mini claw machine filled with Squishmallows at the reception. We were testing it out at home and forgot to rig it to make it harder to win. The claw machine was $440, and we spent $400 on 125 Squishmallows!”

—oliikitslilbui

15.“We overnighted a bunch of blowup instruments and mics. Initially, we just wanted to do a hidden blowup saxophone for the sax solo in our first dance song, but we decided to blow up a bunch of them and have them on the dance floor.”

—sarahglory13

16.“We had a penguin as a guest of honor during our cocktail hour and people have not stopped talking about it!”

—gotcatstyle

18.“We had gold leaves and pearls on our cake and venue painting on vellum for our formal invites. Our favor is a bottle of our favorite wine (per guest). We're trying to coordinate for a champagne tower."

—[deleted]

19."Adoptable puppies instead of bouquets for my bridesmaids. By the end of the ceremony, the troopers' (my maids') arms were noodles."

20.And lastly, “We’re having a live poet who dresses up like a fox and writes custom poems on the spot on a vintage typewriter.”
