Among the players facing the steepest uphill climbs entering camp are quarterback Bailey Zappe and tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Both could find themselves on the outside looking in before the regular season begins.

New era

The Jets begin training camp with a dramatically different identity than last season. Frank Reich now oversees the offense. He will implement a methodical system built around efficiency, disciplined decision-making, and physical football in the trenches. Veteran quarterback Geno Smith takes command of that offense. On defense, head coach Aaron Glenn has assumed play-calling responsibilities. He entrusts veteran linebacker Demario Davis with directing traffic as the centerpiece of a disciplined defensive unit. The front office reinforced its commitment to winning immediately by securing long-term deals for stars like Breece Hall. They also strengthened the secondary with the addition of Minkah Fitzpatrick. Those moves raised expectations. Of course, they also intensified competition at every position. Now, the coaching staff must determine which experienced veterans still fit the long-term vision of the franchise.

QB Bailey Zappe

Bailey Zappe is in one of the most precarious situations on the Jets’ roster. He deserves credit for carving out an NFL career despite entering the league without overwhelming physical tools. He has started regular-season games and shown the poise expected from a reliable backup quarterback.

However, roster construction rarely rewards players caught between two organizational priorities. Geno Smith is firmly established as the starter. That leaves only one question. Can the Jets justify carrying a fourth quarterback? The likely answer is no. Every additional quarterback occupies a roster spot that could otherwise strengthen positions elsewhere. Defensive linemen, linebackers, defensive backs, and special teams contributors often provide greater week-to-week value than a fourth or even third quarterback.

That makes Zappe’s battle exceptionally difficult. His experience certainly works in his favor. However, Reich’s offense also emphasizes creating explosive plays downfield through timing, anticipation, and arm talent. Yes, Zappe has proven capable of managing games. That said, questions about his ability to stretch defenses vertically have followed him throughout his career. The Jets must evaluate whether his skill set justifies sacrificing depth elsewhere.

TE Jeremy Ruckert

Jeremy Ruckert’s situation reflects a different kind of roster challenge. His value has never centered on highlight-reel receptions or gaudy receiving statistics. Instead, Ruckert built his reputation through physical blocking and a willingness to embrace demanding work.

Those traits remain valuable, but the question is whether they remain valuable enough. Reich’s offensive philosophy places significant emphasis on versatility. This means specialization has become more difficult to justify. If defenses recognize that a tight end primarily enters the game to block, they gain valuable information before the snap. That predictability can limit offensive flexibility.

The addition of Jelani Woods also dramatically changes the equation. Woods brings rare size, athleticism, and red-zone potential. His ability to threaten defenses vertically creates opportunities that extend well beyond traditional tight end responsibilities. When combined with the receiving options already ahead of Ruckert on the depth chart, his role becomes increasingly uncertain.

Tough choices ahead

The Jets have spent the offseason building a roster capable of competing immediately under an entirely new coaching staff. That ambition inevitably creates difficult personnel decisions.

Bailey Zappe and Jeremy Ruckert have both demonstrated qualities that NFL coaches appreciate. Zappe offers professionalism and valuable quarterback experience. Ruckert has consistently embraced the physical, unselfish aspects of playing tight end.

Unfortunately, experience alone rarely guarantees job security. The NFL is driven by production, versatility, and long-term roster efficiency. As the Jets continue shaping a roster built around Frank Reich’s offense and Aaron Glenn’s defensive philosophy, difficult sacrifices become unavoidable.

Training camp always creates opportunities for unexpected players to emerge. It also forces organizations to move on from familiar faces. Unless Zappe can convince the coaching staff that carrying a fourth quarterback is worthwhile and Ruckert can prove he offers more than his blocking ability, both veterans could become among the Jets’ most notable roster cuts before the 2026 regular season officially begins.
