Most music lovers will agree that a road trip needs a solid playlist. In 2025, Rolling Stone magazinemade coming up with said playlist a whole lot easier by compiling a list of the "50 best road-trip songs" ever released.
The list included hits like The Doors' 1970 song, "Roadhouse Blues," the 1977 classic "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, "Gin and Juice" by Snoop Dogg from 1993, AC/DC's 1979 "Highway to Hell," Tracy Chapman's 1988 song "Fast Car," The Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun" from 1964, and Bruce Springsteen's "Drive All Night" from 1980. The top five ranking featured Lit's 1999 hit "My Own Worst Enemy," the 2011 song "Rolling in the Deep" byAdele, Golden Earring's 1973 song "Radar Love," and "Crosstown Traffic" from 1968 by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
"Roadrunner" by The Modern Lovers, released in 1976, took home the title as the best road-trip song. Rolling Stone reported that the classic, written by the band's singer Jonathan Richman, is the quintessential song to play while on the road because of its appreciative, highway-themed lyrics.
Jonathan Richman Briefly Discussed 'Roadrunner' in a 2021 Interview
Richman, now 74, briefly discussed "Roadrunner" during a 2021 interview with TheSpinoff. The publication reported that the song was featured on the 2003 comedy, School of Rock soundtrack. In the interview, Richman was implored to share whether he believed the film's director Richard Linklater was correct when he declared that "Roadrunner" was "the first punk song."
"No. When we were playing we were just a rock band, and thought of ourselves as only that," replied the Massachusetts native.
In the Spinoff interview, Richman also shared some words of wisdom to those who are trying to make it in the music industry.
"I think the same principle applies now as applied then: Sing what you feel, and don’t sing what you don’t feel," said "That Summer Feeling" singer.
