Older dogs often remain in shelters longer than younger canines. Potential pet parents hesitate bringing these elderly pooches home due to possible health issues or shorter life span, yet these fur babies bring so much love and gratitude to everyone they meet.

Glen is a 10-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever currently at Saving Sage Animal Rescue who is hoping to finally get a family of his own.

In the TikTok from @rescuewithme, Glen was in transit and heading toward the rescue headquarters in Broward County, Fla. The precious pooch spent his whole life in an outside breeding kennel without any sort of love or affection.

"He is 10 years old and lived his entire life in a kennel with concrete floor," the caption explained. "He’s never known life in a home or a soft bed."

Glen hasn't received any adoption applications yet, most likely because of his age. Followers lobbied to share Glen's story in the hopes of getting him a forever home:

  • "Poor baby. Someone save him," one pleaded.
  • "Praying someone adopts this baby so he can have the home he’s always deserved!" another posted.
  • "Gorgeous boy!! The senior years are the sweetest and he has many years left!" a follower pointed out.
  • "Sweetest Glen needs a loving home ASAP," someone commented.

How to Help a Dog Adjust to His First Real Home

A rescue dog who has never lived in a home environment needs a lot of time and patience from pet parents to acclimate. Many animal welfare organizations point out the 3-3-3 rule of thumb for how your pooch will progress:

  • First 3 days: Feeling overwhelmed and nervous — Your dog may have accidents in the house, frequently sleep, hide or stay alone, and avoid eating and drinking. During this phase, give your pup space and follow their cues. Don't push socializing. Begin setting a routine with them and limit visitors.
  • First 3 weeks: Starting to settle in and learn routines — You may notice your dog eating more, testing boundaries, showing more curiosity, and exploring new areas of your home. Start basic training to establish boundaries, and take your dog for short walks. Be sure to stick to a routine for structure, which makes dogs feel safe. Use lots of positive reinforcement and praise.
  • First 3 months: Building trust and feeling at home — Your dog will start showing their real personality, be more obedient and confident, and start building bonds with family members. Their appetite will increase, and their anxiety will decrease. Be sure to keep your dog's daily routine and slowly introduce new experiences. Maintain regular vet appointments, and always encourage and reward positive behavior.

This blueprint allows pet parents to know what to expect during their dog's transition. Many rescue dogs have experienced trauma and need lots of compassion and understanding to adapt to a new home. Your patience will definitely be rewarded.
