Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ballis full of incredibly powerful characters, yet there are still occasions in which their strength falls short and they need to turn to alternative methods to succeed. Fusion igained prominence during Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga, which involves two, or sometimes more, individuals combining their strength and skills into one superior warrior.
Fusion continued to evolve and gain depth over time, and it’s now one of the most useful skills in the Z-Fighters’ attack arsenal. It’s always exciting to watch one or more fused powerhouses duke it out in battle, and it’s rare for one of these combined brawlers to fall below expectations. That being said, there are some particularly prolific examples of fused characters in Dragon Ball who represent some of the franchise’s fiercest fighters.
Aka’s Fused Fury Still Falls Short Against Basic Transformations
Dragon Ball’s 2008’s anniversary OVA, Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, is a somewhat obscure chapter in the franchise, albeit one that features some entertaining fused fighting. Not only does this special introduce Vegeta’s younger brother, Tarble, but also two lowly Frieza Force soldiers, Abo and Kado. Abo and Kado aren’t much on their own, which prompts them to fuse together into Aka.
Aka engages in a playful fight with Gotenks before Goku ultimately saves the day when his Kamehameha overpowers Aka’s Full Power Wahaha no Ha blast. Aka has an intimidating appearance, but the fact that he’s easily defeated by Goku at his base Super Saiyan level and experiences similar struggles against Super Saiyan Gotenks reflects the severe limits of his power.
Saonel & Pirina Are The Fused Culmination Of Universe 6’s Namekian
Fusion plays a fascinating role in Namekian lore in the sense that their species can perform a permanent fusion with their own kind in which the weaker individual is absorbed into the other’s body. Piccolo performs this unique Namekeian fusion with Nail and then again later with Kami. Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power features two powerful Namekians from Universe 6, Saonel and Pirina, who reveal that they’ve repeatedly fused with all their universe’s Namekians until only they were left.
This implies a remarkable level of power that helps them stand out in the Tournament of Power. Appropriately enough, they’re defeated with minimal difficulty by Gohan and Piccolo, the latter of whom takes out both Namekians with his signature Special Beam Cannon attack. Maybe they would have lasted longer if they both fused into one even stronger fighter.

Gotenks marks one of Dragon Ball Z’s first major fusions and a proper look at what’s possible with this power. Goten and Trunks’ combined Saiyan strength elevates them to Super Saiyan 3 status, which is an incredibly rare feat in Dragon Ball. There’s even a moment when it seems like Gotenks is Earth’s best shot at defeating Buu.
Gotenks also benefits from one of Dragon Ball’s most creative roster of techniques that includes absurd and dangerous abilities like his Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack. Unfortunately, Goten and Trunks – and Gotenks, by extension – has seriously regressed in Dragon Ball Super. It seems to be a challenge for the two Saiyans to even successfully fuse anymore. That being said, Gotenks still holds the potential for greatness.
Majuub Helps Uub Realize His Full Potential
Uub, Kid Buu’s kind-hearted human reincarnation, remains one of Dragon Ball’s biggest missed opportunities due to how he’s properly introduced during Dragon Ball Z’s 28th World Tournament. Dragon Ball GT is the only anime that’s been able to properly put Uub in the spotlight and his climactic clash against Baby Vegeta leads to a very surprising fusion. Good Buu reunites with Uub and triggers a unique fusion in which he becomes Majuub.
Majuub doesn’t look that different from Uub, other than the new vest and attire that he obtains. However, he gains a substantial power boost and some of Buu’s magic. His Chocolate Kamehameha, for instance, can turn people into candy. Majuub doesn’t win any battles in Dragon Ball GT, but he helps against some totemic villains, like Golden Great Ape Baby Vegeta, Super 17, and Syn Shenron.
Super 17 Is The Malevolent Union Of Two Intense Androids
A precedent for Android fusion was first established in Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, in which Android 13 merges with Android 14 and 15’s microchips to become something greater. Dragon Ball GT’s Super 17 follows a slightly different process where Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17 merge to become Super 17. Super 17 is one of GT’s most unpopular villains, but his strength can’t be denied.
Super 17 holds his own against Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Super Saiyan Vegeta, and Majuub, which is no small feat. Super 17 can also absorb energy and convert it into power. This effectively makes him stronger when he consumes Goku’s 10x Kamehameha. In the end, Goku’s Dragon Fist demolishes the intimidating Android.
Universe 3’s Anilaza Abuses Fusion Mechanics To Become A Gigantic Juggernaut
Fusion is presented as a liability in the Tournament of Power since a fused fighter’s elimination means that multiple teammates are now out of the running. Universe 3 doesn’t let this risk slow them down when Borareta, Koitsukai and Pancéa fuse into Koicéareta, who in turn fuses with Paparoni to become Anilaza. Anilaza is a humongous, amorphous Android who slightly resembles the obscure villain, Hatchiyack.
Anilaza wreaks havoc in the Tournament of Power and keeps up with an intense tag team attack by Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta, Golden Frieza, Gohan, and Android 17. Anilaza is a serious threat, but he becomes much easier to take down once his weak spot – his energy reactor on his forehead – is identified.
Universe 6’s Kefla Exudes Confidence & Legendary Super Saiyan Strength
Universe 6’s Kale and Caulifla are powerful and compelling characters as individuals. They resort to Potara fusion and become Kefla when the Tournament of Power’s competition begins to heat up. Kefla internalizes Kale’s Legendary Super Saiyan power and Caulifla’s zest for combat and this fused fighter makes swift work of her opponents. Kefla, only as a standard Super Saiyan, overpowers Goku in his Super
Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue forms. She can even handle his strenuous Blue Kaio-Ken upgrade. Goku has to awaken his burgeoning Ultra Instinct Sign transformation to keep up with Super Saiyan 2 Kefla, but ultimately defeats her with a creative battle strategy. Super Saiyan 2 Kefla’s ability to trade blows with Ultra Instinct Sign means that she could potentially be unstoppable as Super Saiyan 3 and beyond.
Shallet Is An Ancient Saiyan With The Power Of Gods On His Side
Shallet is the Metamoran fusion result of Ancient Saiyan twins, Shallot and Giblet, who made their debut in Dragon Ball Legends. While not strictly canon characters, these Saiyans were designed by Akira Toriyama and have received action figures by S.H. Figurarts. Shallot has even found his way onto Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO’s roster. Shallet is significant since he’s the only Super Saiyan God fusion who has been featured in Dragon Ball.
Shallet’s only real battle in Dragon Ball Legends is against Future Zamasu and Goku Black, but an Ancient Saiyan with Super Saiyan God strength can do tremendous damage and should trump Kefla’s Super Saiyan 2 plateau. It looks like big things could be coming for Shallet and his power may continue to rise.
Gogeta Is Goku & Vegeta’s Metamoran Fusion Powerhouse
Goku and Vegeta are two of Dragon Ball’s most powerful characters and so it stands to reason that any means of fusion between them is going to be remarkably strong. Gogeta becomes the surprising climax to both Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn and Dragon Ball Super: Broly and in both cases they immediately destroy the competition. Super Saiyan Gogeta’s Stardust Breaker against Janemba is a deeply destructive strike.
Meanwhile, Gogeta Blue literally tears through dimensions as he beats up Broly. It’s also worth pointing out that Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, while technically unsuccessful, still manages to make Dragon Ball GT’s Omega Shenron look like child’s play. Gogeta’s arrogance sometimes gets the better of him, but he definitely has the strength to back up his cockiness.
Vegito Represents Vegeta & Goku’s Peak Fusion Power
There are still lively debates about whether Gogeta or Vegito is the stronger of Goku and Vegeta’s fusions, but Dragon Ball indicates that Potara fusions have a higher raw power multiplier since individuals don't have to match each other's power levels before fusion. Vegito makes his debut against Super Buu, where he completely turns the tables on this apocalyptic threat. He’s even able to beat up the Majin menace after he’s been transformed into candy.
Vegito also returns in Dragon Ball Super’s “Future” Trunks Saga to take down the villainous union of Fused Zamasu. Vegito ascends to Super Saiyan Blue status and shows off his deadly Final Kamehameha. Goku and Vegeta have both grown significantly stronger since Vegito’s last appearance, which hopefully means that he’ll make a return against Black Frieza and reach even greater heights.
