The right pairing can be the difference between a K-drama flopping and becoming an instant classic. While the genre as a whole grows more ubiquitous with each passing year, the vast majority of K-dramas are still comprised of romantic comedies. Yet, a show could have the perfect storyline, picturesque setting, or star-studded cast and still fail to resonate with audiences. As long as the K-drama's main couple has chemistry, however, there's very little that can't be overlooked.
Considering there's an entire niche of fans devoted to ranking the best K-drama kisses, it's a truth universally acknowledged that if the two leads are compatible, a series can practically get away with murder. Nevertheless, there are endless possibilities for how exactly a K-drama can craft its central romance. Across time, space, and every sub-genre imaginable, there are countless pairings in Korean TV series that become iconic simply due to their palpable chemistry.
Gu Won & Cheon Sa-rang – King the Land
Since its 2023 premiere, King the Land has remained one of Netflix's best romantic K-dramas. The workplace rom-com follows Cheon Sa-rang (Im Yoon-ah), a hotelier with a seemingly magical smile and the uncanny ability to disarm even the most unruly guests. Naturally, everything changes when chaebol heir Gu Won (Lee Jun-ho) appears as the hotel's newest general manager.
King the Land is trope-laden by design, but the wide array of clichés could have detracted from the story had the leads not pulled it off so seamlessly. Individually, Gu Won and Cheon Sa-rang are incredibly nuanced characters, but the sparks truly fly whenever they're on-screen together. Whether they're in the early antagonistic stage of their relationship or their love-drunk happily ever-after, Gu Won and Cheon Sa-rang are undoubtedly the reason King the Land is as popular as it is.
Baek Yi-jin & Na Hee-do – Twenty-Five Twenty-One
Similarly, Twenty-Five Twenty-One may have been written off as a melodramatic coming-of-age tale if Baek Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk) and Na Hee-do (Kim Tae-ri) hadn't made such a perfect pair. Whereas Hee-do was driven by her passion for fencing, Yi-jin was struggling to recover from his family falling into sudden poverty as a result of a continental financial crisis.
Consequently, Hee-do and Yi-jin's romance wasn't a case of low-stakes young love; the pair hurt and healed together time after time— until they abruptly found themselves on different life paths. The K-drama's infamous ending was always going to be tragic, but the obvious potential Yi-jin and Hee-do had as a couple is what made it such an effective twist that viewers can't stop talking about, four years later.
Jung Yi-hyun & Yoon Sae-bom – Happiness
Happiness may be a must-watch horror K-drama, but it ironically has one of the best love stories of the last five years. Yoon Sae-bom (Han Hyo-joo) and Jung Yi-hyun (Park Hyung-sik) are primarily partners-in-crimesolving, banding together to investigate the mysterious virus taking over their apartment building. Regardless, Yi-hyun's feelings for Sae-bom form one of the K-drama's best subplots.
In the face of a terrifying zombie apocalypse, Yi-hyun chooses love at every opportunity. Meanwhile, Sae-bom may appear closed-off initially, but when push comes to shove, it's clear she reciprocates her partner's feelings. Their unconventional romance is so gripping, in fact, it ups the ante of Happiness even further, as it's impossible not to root for the couple to prevail over hordes of bloodthirsty creatures and corrupt corporations.
Lee Kang & Park Dal-i – Moon River
Soul-swapping stories are always hit-or-miss, but Moon River managed to thread the needle flawlessly and truly sell its main pairing. The romantasy K-drama is helmed by certified heartthrob Kang Tae-oh as Crown Prince Lee Kang and beloved former idol Kim Se-jeong as Park Dal-i, a skilled peddler who loses her memory.
Moon River takes a major risk when the two vastly different figures mysteriously swap bodies, but it pays off in dividends thanks to the acting prowess of the two leads. Since Kim Se-jeong and Kang Tae-oh meticulously studied each other's mannerisms, speech patterns, and small quirks, Lee Kang and Park Dal-i never feel like caricatures. Rather, the main characters seem like full-fledged people with obvious internality, and even their differences feel perfectly balanced.
Lee Ho-soo & Yoo Mi-ji – Our Unwritten Seoul
Without question, Our Unwritten Seoul was one of the best K-dramas of 2025, due in part to the slow-burn romance between Lee Ho-soo (Park Jin-young) and Yoo Mi-ji (Park Bo-young). Ho-soo met Mi-ji and her twin sister, Yoo Mi-rae (also portrayed by Park Bo-young), in high school, but his feelings never wavered. In a world where most people treated Mi-rae's superiority as a simple fact of life, Ho-soo saw Mi-ji for who she truly was— and loved her for it.
Even when Mi-ji swaps lives with her twin sister and has to stay undercover, Ho-soo quickly catches on, which is yet another testament to his heartwarming, long-harbored feelings for her. In general, Our Unwritten Seoul is a masterclass in acting, but the way Park Bo-young manages to have wildly different chemistry with Park Jin-young as Mi-ji and Mi-rae is nothing short of transcendent.
Ryu Sun-jae & Im Sol – Lovely Runner
Lovely Runner is an unforgettable K-drama about time-travel, but it is first and foremost a wholesome story of first love. In the present, Ryu Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok) is a K-pop star, and Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon) is his number one fan. After missing a major concert, however, Im Sol ends up traveling back to the year 2008, where she discovers her favorite idol isn't just from her hometown; he lives right next door.
Time-slip hijinks throw the pair for many arduous loops, but Sol's unwavering allegiance to Sun-jae— coupled with Sun-jae's clear devotion for his neighbor— makes for a winning rom-com set-up. When classic K-drama circumstances force them apart, the viewer mourns for the pair. When they earned a swoonworthy kiss scene, the audience cheers, all thanks to the uncontrollable, almost magnetic pull of attraction that makes Ryu Sun-jae and Im Sol an iconic couple.
Cha Sung-hoon & Jin Young-seo – Business Proposal
For many romance fans, Business Proposal was a gateway K-drama. The tongue-in-cheek pastiche of rom-com tropes added a clever edge to a nonetheless captivating narrative, and the main characters were a storybook pairing. Nevertheless, Business Proposal truly struck gold with its secondary K-drama couple: Cha Sung-hoon (Kim Min-kyu) and Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah).
In a lesser K-drama, it might have felt boring and all too predictable for the female lead's best friend to fall for the male lead's brother figure. Yet, even the staunchest rom-com haters cannot possibly deny the sizzling chemistry between Sung-hoon and Young-seo, which culminates in some of the steamiest scenes of modern K-drama history.
Ryan Gold & Sung Deok-mi – Her Private Life
Park Min-young is the queen of K-drama romances, but her magnum opus is still incontestably Her Private Life. The A-list actress plays Sung Deok-mi, an art curator by day who runs a famous fan account for a leading K-pop idol by night. Rather than pair her up with her bias, however, the secret identity K-drama throws a wrench into her double life: Ryan Gold (Kim Jae-wook), her new boss.
A comedy of errors forces the two to take part in a fake dating scheme, but the feelings become uncomfortably real the longer they spend together. Once they give up the charade and begin seriously dating, Ryan and Deok-mi become the gold standard for K-drama couples due to their healthy communication style and sweet displays of affection. Furthermore, there's an unmistakable sense of longing and lust that adds a realistically mature layer to their relationship.
Ahn Min-hyuk & Do Bong-soon – Strong Girl Bong-soon
Aside from being one of Park Bo-young's best projects to date, Strong Girl Bong-soon is a genre-defining superhero story with a rom-com flair. At the center of the action-packed K-drama is the eponymous Do Bong-soon (Park Bo-young), a woman who inherited super strength from a strange matrilineal blessing. Though she hides her powers for years, her life turns upside down after CEO Ahn Min-hyuk (Park Hyung-sik) hires her to be his bodyguard.
Strong Girl Bong-soon is far from a subdued or serious show, but there's nothing silly or gratuitously melodramatic about Bong-soon and Min-hyuk's connection. In the midst of mafia fights, a lurking serial killer, and a tense inheritance battle, Bong-soon and Min-hyuk's relationship adds some much-needed substance that grounds the entire series. Their banter is so effortless, it feels as though the characters are actually flirting rather than reading a script. There are ample reasons for Strong Girl Bong-soon's lasting popularity, but arguably its greatest strength is Min-hyuk and Bong-soon's one-of-a-kind romance.
Ri Jeong-hyeok & Yoon Se-ri – Crash Landing On You
Of course, it's impossible to talk about memorable K-drama couples without mentioning Crash Landing on You. The South Korean masterpiece is partially responsible for the genre's extreme boom in the past decade, and the star-crossed love story between chaebol heiress Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) and North Korean army captain Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin) is one for the ages.
As epoch-making as Crash Landing on You is on its own, though, Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok's relationship was so believable due in part to the actors' natural chemistry. After filming, Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin genuinely fell in love, eventually marrying and having a child together. The real-life connection makes the show that much more iconic, and Yoon Se-ri and Ri Jeong-hyeok will certainly go down in history as one of the best K-drama couples of all time.
