The New York Knicks won the 2026 NBA Finals, but they didn’t have long to celebrate. The team had to immediately prepare for what has become arguably the craziest offseason in league history. As champions, their players were highly coveted in free agency. While the Knicks did well to bring back the majority of the core, they did lose some contributors, including Ariel Hukporti and Mitchell Robinson.
New York also had to reinforce the roster with draft picks. The team added Jack Kayil and Tyler Nickel in the 2026 NBA Draft, both of whom were given sizable roles during the NBA Summer League. The Knicks aren’t done adding to their roster, though. They still have open roster spots, including all three of their two-way slots. The Summer League offered a chance not just for their recent draftees to develop, but for some unheralded players to prove they belong in the NBA. So, was there an undrafted player who earned a roster spot?
Knicks should sign Liam Robbins after his Summer League performance
The Knicks prioritized playing their recent draft picks during the NBA Summer League. Nickel and Kayil ranked first and sixth, respectively, in minutes per game. Furthermore, Pacome Dadiet, their most recent first-round selection, led the team with 15.3 points per game.

That left former undrafted player Liam Robbins playing just 18.5 minutes per game, but the big man who played college ball at Drake, Minnesota, and Vanderbilt made the most of his limited time on the floor. Robbins averaged 9.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game, respectable numbers across the board that display the 7-footer’s versatility.
The rim protection, in particular, is nothing new for Robbins and something the Knicks could benefit from having on their roster. During a five-year collegiate career, the Wisconsin native twice led his conference in blocks per game. He averaged as much as 3.2 blocks per game during his super senior season at Vanderbilt en route to being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
The Knicks lost their best shot blocker when Robinson joined the Boston Celtics, so they need someone new who can back up Karl-Anthony Towns and protect the rim. As of now, the recently signed Andre Drummond is the only true backup center on the roster. While he is a big body with a track record of production, Drummond’s play has fallen off in recent years.
Robbins started his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, who gave him just 13 games of garbage time action. He did win an NBA Cup with the team, though. The center has had some success in the G-League, too. He showed serious 3-point shooting potential with the Wisconsin Herd and was highly efficient inside with the Rip City Remix last season. He stood out in the Summer League, though.
Robbins plays a position of need and offers a skill set the Knicks lack. New York doesn’t necessarily need to give him a guaranteed contract, but he at least played his way into a two-way deal.
