The Chicago Bears have a surprise starter waiting to happen as receiver Zavion Thomas offers a mix of speed and

The Chicago Bears have zero questions when it comes to the top two spots on the team's receiver depth chart. Rome Odunze and Luther Burden are expected to hold down the position as the primary weapons, where things grow a bit more interesting is considering the third starting role. It is easy to argue that this is of slightly less importance than it is for a typical team with the talent at both tight end and the running back positions. However, there is a rookie receiver threatening to change this perspective in training camp.

Zavion Thomas has wasted little time gaining momentum, showing a strong work ethic and flashing elite speed that would perfectly fit into Ben Johnson's offense. Even more exciting is the fact that veteran free agent addition Kalif Raymond spent time working with the pass catcher instead of viewing the rookie as an enemy.

No question, it appears there is a surprise path for Thomas to become a starter in Week 1 for Chicago. It would be a welcome addition to the lineup after the offseason loss of DJ Moore. While it is Odunze and Burden who are expected to pick up the slack, there is a lack of proven options on the team's current depth chart.

Bears Rookie Receiver Zavion Thomas Making a Clear Case to Begin 2026 Season in Starting Lineup

Thomas was drafted 89th overall after finishing with 488 receiving yards in his final season with LSU. It isn't eye-popping numbers, but it is the exact type of production that the Bears would love to find in a player added later in the draft and perfectly equipped to step in as the third option and present a needed level of consistency.

It is important to note that this isn't to predict a huge season for Thomas, or to say the rookie belongs in the same conversation as the team's primary options. Rather, it means to point out the clear potential of Thomas and his fit within an offense that has an open competition on the receiver depth chart after the first two options.

No question, the pass catcher is on an exciting path and has the full attention of the fanbase heading deeper into training camp and towards the regular season. The hope remains that the rookie surpasses veteran Kalif Raymond and is able to take on a starting role that would give Chicago an argument as having the most explosive group of athletes in the NFC at the position.
