For most WWE Superstars, wrestling at WrestleMania is the biggest achievement of their career and usually comes with the biggest paycheck. But WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam recently revealed that the most amount of money he made came at a different event involving John Cena.
During a recent appearance on the Eldow podcast, RVD looked back at his famous WWE Championship win over John Cena at ECW One Night Stand 2006.
Rob Van Dam says ECW One Night Stand was more lucrative than WrestleMania
Talking about the match with Cena, Van Dam explained why ECW One Night Stand still means so much to him. He also addressed comments he made in the past about missing that event being more disappointing than missing WrestleMania.
According to RVD, there was a very good reason for that.
“For sure. There’s so many reasons, but you know, just to back up what I heard you just said, for anybody that was in WWE, that might have been offended by me saying missing that One Night Stand was worse than missing WrestleMania. The match we’re talking about when I did wrestle John Cena at ECW One Night Stand, I made way, way, way more money than I ever made at any of the WrestleMania,” Van Dam said.
That may surprise many fans since WrestleMania is WWE’s biggest show every year. But ECW One Night Stand 2006 was a special event.
After winning the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 22, RVD didn’t cash in his contract. Instead, he announced in advance that he would challenge Cena for the WWE Championship under Extreme Rules at ECW One Night Stand.
The match took place on June 11, 2006, at the famous Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The crowd was packed with ECW fans who were strongly behind RVD. It was one of the most hostile crowds Cena had ever faced.
The match lived up to the hype. Both men battled all over the arena. Cena even leaned into the hostile crowd reactions, almost playing the role of a villain.
The referee was accidentally knocked out. Edge interfered and hit Cena with a spear through a table in the corner, and RVD took advantage. With the referee still down, ECW founder Paul Heyman ran into the ring and counted the three-count. RVD emerged as the new WWE Champion just like out of a fairytale ending from a storybook.
It was the first and only time Van Dam won the WWE Championship.
