The Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro will reach the end of updates with the arrival of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1, as Google officially confirms that the end-of-life status for both devices is here. While Google now offers 7 years of Android OS, Security, and Feature Drop updates for all of its new Pixel phones, Google hasn’t always offered updates on devices for this long. It didn’t start with the 7-year cycle until the Pixel 8 series. However, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have continued to get updates past the original time frame that Google had set out to offer.
This allowed users to keep their phones up to date with the latest Android OS features and the newest security changes. Google says that this will all be ending with the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 series of software updates.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have reached end of life with the Android 17 QPR1 series
The beta preview for Android 17 QPR1 is coming to an end with the Beta 1 push of Android 17 QPR2, and Android 17 QPR1 should be released as part of a feature drop in September. This stable release will be the last update that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro get.
In its official patch notes for Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1, Google explicitly states that the new beta software is not rolling out over-the-air to either of these two devices. The Pixel 6a will still be included, however.
With these two older Pixel devices not getting any more updates, they’ll be left behind when it comes to new features and security or bug fixes. The phones will still work perfectly fine for people who are still using them though. Of course, this does mean that users run the risk of continuing to use a device that will eventually be less secure than newer models.
