A Winthrop homeowner escaped a fire with his three dogs, despite his home taking significant damage on Monday.
A passerby reported a house fire on Route 51 at around 3 p.m., according to a news release from the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office. Winthrop police arrived first and notified the homeowner, helping him escape with his three dogs.
Winthrop fire and rescue crews then arrived, and with help from departments in Augusta and seven towns, they brought the fire under control, officials said.
Two Winthrop firefighters were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center for heat-related illnesses, but have since been released.
The homeowner and his dogs were not injured, according to officials.
Investigators with the fire marshal's office found the fire started in dry mulch near the front porch, and was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.
