Tom Cruise is returning to the auto racing world in Days of Thunder 2, the sequel to Tony Scott's 1990 NASCAR movie. Jonathan Levine will direct with a script from Will Staples, while Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer are producing, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
It's another step into the post-Mission: Impossible career for Cruise. His first following M:I's conclusion is Digger, a black comedy from acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro Inarritu, which hits theaters on Oct. 2.
Days of Thunder 2 is a major opportunity for Levine, who's primarily worked on comedies such as The Night Before, Warm Bodies and Long Shot. His upcoming movie Mr. Irrelevant, which stars Superman's David Corenswet as New York Giants draftee John Tuggle, is reportedly testing extraordinarily well, so the leap into another sports vehicle makes sense.
Now, the big question: Will Brad Pitt join Cruise on the track? It's been rumored for months now, with F1 director Joseph Kosinski even saying reuniting the two in a racing movie would be a dream project. Pitt recently helped make F1 a massive hit and grew a deep appreciation for auto racing in the process.
We've got no indication Pitt is in Days of Thunder 2, however. Perhaps that changes, but for now, the only way to catch Pitt and Cruise on screen together is in Neil Jordan's Interview with the Vampire.
Days of Thunder cast
The original film starred Cruise, Nicole Kidman, John C. Reilly, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker and Robert Duvall. It's unclear which of the non-Cruise actors are returning, but since the legendary Duvall died in February he will not partake in the sequel. Pitt would certainly be a massive addition if Levine and Staples can find a way to work him in.
