Wildfire burning near SLO County line expands - but containment also grows

The fire sparked Sunday afternoon.

The Williams Fire scorched 135 acres in southern Monterey County near the San Luis Obispo County line as of Monday afternoon, after initially sparking Sunday.

The vegetation fire first started west of the San Ardo community around 3 p.m. Sunday and quickly blackened 100 acres on both sides of Lockwood San Ardo Road.

No structures were threatened, but the fire originally had a potential spread for 1,000 acres, according to the emergency wildfire app Watch Duty.

By 8 p.m. Sunday, the blaze was 15% contained and forward progress was stopped, Cal Fire said in a Facebook post. The agency said firefighters had made steady progress keeping the fire to around 120 acres between the road system and a westside fuel break.

Overnight, Cal Fire said favorable weather conditions helped firefighters bolster containment lines and mop-up operations.

Around noon on Monday, Cal Fire said the fire had scorched 135 acres due to “more accurate mapping” and remained at 20% containment.

“Firefighters continue to strengthen containment lines and extinguish remaining hotspots,” Cal Fire said. “Crews will remain on scene until the incident is fully contained.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Cal Fire.
