WASHINGTON – President Trump’s administration is taking a victory lap after New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill admitted more than 6,000 non-citizens had been added to the state’s voter rolls, doubling down on its call for a voter ID bill to become law.
Trump and his staff have been pushing Congress hard to pass the Save America Act, which would require states to purge their voting rolls of non-citizens.
“Democrats and their media allies have repeatedly said it is impossible for noncitizens to register to vote, let alone cast a ballot. Time and again, they have been proven wrong,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told The Post.
“As President Trump has said, there is nothing more important than the integrity of our elections. And this latest incident underscores the absolute necessity of the SAVE America Act. American voters deserve to have confidence that our elections are safe and secure – President Trump will never stop fighting to make that happen and all patriotic Americans should join in his effort.”
The Save America Act would require Americans to prove their citizenship when registering to vote and to show photo identification.

The president, however, has added a host of other provisions to the legislation, including a section to ban most mail voting, banning transgender women and girls from competing in women’s and girls’ sports, and restricting transgender medical treatments for minors.
A version of the legislation has passed the House but is still in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to advance.
But the Trump administration continued its push.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted that “Just ONE illegal vote cancels out the vote of a U.S. citizen. As @DHSgov reported last week—New Jersey could have as many as 35,152 potential non-citizens registered to vote.”
“Looking forward to working with you to secure your elections in the future,” he added in his post on social media.
After Trump addressed the nation last week about election interference, Mullin revealed four states have thousands of non-citizens on their voting rolls.
Sherrill, a Democrat, said the issue in New Jersey stemmed from a software screwup at the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission, which automatically registered around 6,600 non-Americans to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.
Despite applicants for driver’s licenses or ID cards indicating “no” on a keypad when asked if they were citizens, the system recorded them as eligible to vote anyway.
The roughly 400 people who illegally voted were “registered as Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state,” she said.
“We have no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed,” she added.
But several local elections had a less than 400-vote margin between the winner and the loser.
While it’s unclear if any of the non-citizens voted in these contests, it does show how a few votes can make a difference in the outcome.
In 2023, New Jersey General Assembly District 31’s Republican primary had a difference of four votes between the winner and loser.
That same year, District 32’s Republican primary had a difference of six votes, District 3’s Republican primary had a difference of nine votes, while District 38’s Republican primary had a difference of 10 votes.
In 2024, the election for Berlin Township council in Camden County saw a difference of seven votes between the winners of the two spots – who got 33 and 32 votes, respectively – and the losers, who got 25 votes each.
That same year, the election for Newark Public Schools had a difference of four votes.
And, in 2025, only 193 votes separated the winner from the loser in the second district assembly’s election to fill two seats.
While in the state general assembly that year, District 4’s Democratic primary had a winning margin of nine votes.
