Livability, which has highlighted American cities and what makes them great places to live for more than 30 years, ranked the Steel City among the top half of their 2026 list of 100 best places to live in the U.S.

Two factors help Pittsburgh ranks among most livable cities of 2026
Overall, Pittsburgh ranked at No. 32 on Livability's list of most livable cities, with a Quality of Life LivScore of 720 out of a possible 1,000. Here's how it ranked in other subcategories:
- Amenities: No. 2
- Economy: No. 12
- Health: No. 35
- Education: No. 46
- Environment: No. 49
- Safety: No. 65
- Housing and cost of living: No. 67
- Transportation: No. 90
To determine cities' rankings, Livability commissioned proprietary data on U.S. cities and partnered with Applied Geographic Solutions to score cities based on factors such as economy and housing; amenities and environment; safety, health and education and transportation, with an emphasis on accessibility and affordability.
What makes Pittsburgh great for its livability?
Livability highlighted Pittsburgh's culture, economy and innovations as what make the city a great place to live.
The ongoing innovations; the cost of living and housing; the area's sports, museums and parks and the city's 90 neighborhoods are the top reasons Livability recommends living in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh scores high for young homebuyers, retirees
In addition to scoring well for its overall livability, recent reports have ranked Pittsburgh among the best cities in America, as well as one of the best metro areas for young homeowners and retirees.
In June, Resonance ranked Pittsburgh at No. 25 on their list of "America's Best Cities." The ranking was based on factors like economic data, quality of living and public perception.
The same month, Investopedia ranked Pittsburgh at No. 10 among the 20 best cities in the Northeast for retirees based on factors such as its cost of living, culture, walkability and public transportation, healthcare and outdoor amenities.
This month, ConsumerAffairs ranked Pittsburgh at No. 7 among the top 10 metro areas in the U.S. for homeowners under 35. The report examined factors such as data on homeownership rates and mortgage lending activity to track access to homeownership for young people, median home sale price from Zillow, median household income for householders under 44 from the U.S. Census Bureau, home-price-to-income ratio, trends in homeownership rates across several years and loan type distribution.
