What started as a dispute over mortgage payments devolved into a disturbing “rape fantasy” plot involving a former U.S. marshal, his ex-fiancée, and his new wife. A Netflix documentary, A Toxic Love Story, streaming on Wednesday, July 22, examines the twist-filled case set in sunny Southern California.
The project recounts the events surrounding the feud between Michelle Hadley and her ex Ian Diaz and his then-wife Angela Diaz. The couple schemed to frame Hadley, who was initially arrested and sent to prison, for posing as Angela and posting rape fantasy ads on Craigslist. Ultimately, Hadley was released and found innocent after authorities discovered Ian and Angela had orchestrated a series of fake emails, online ads, and police calls implicating her.
Years later, Hadley has worked to rebuild her life and is sharing her side of the story in a new interview for the documentary. Here’s what we know about her experience throughout the intricate plot and her status today.
Who Is Michelle Hadley?
Little is known publicly about Michelle Hadley’s childhood or background. She was a graduate student at the time of the events surrounding the Toxic Love Story case.
Hadley met and began dating Ian Diaz—then employed as a U.S. marshal—in October 2013, according to court filings. The pair later became engaged.
However, Hadley claimed their connection deteriorated after Diaz became “controlling and abusive.” Hadley also alleged Diaz arranged for a stranger from Craigslist to come over and have sex with her while Diaz watched through cameras in their bedroom, which she later told him felt like rape.
The relationship further broke down after Diaz and Hadley purchased a condominium in June 2015 near Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Hadley provided a down payment of more than $14,000 and the couple took out a mortgage for just under $460,000, according to CBS News.
Hadley and Diaz broke up in August 2015, with the latter continuing to live at the property. However, they continued to feud over payments. Although she no longer lived there, Hadley was partially responsible for part of the mortgage payments.
By February 2016, Diaz had married Angela Connell, whom he met through a dating site. She moved into the Anaheim condo with him. Despite finding a new love, Diaz remained fixated on the fight over the condo with his ex.
Why Was Michelle Hadley Falsely Arrested?
In May 2016, Angela claimed she was pregnant with twins.
Weeks later, starting on June 1, Angela contacted Anaheim police and accused Hadley of sending her threatening emails, according to a news release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. She also provided documentation (which turned out to be fake) suggesting Hadley was impersonating her in Craigslist ads and asking men to show up at the condo to engage in “rape fantasy” sexual encounters. These messages included photographs of Angela and her address.
Continuing through July 13, Angela reported multiple incidents of men arriving at her residence in response to the ads. Police even intercepted two men and a 17-year-old, who each claimed they were responding to the solicitation.
In reality, the ads were all fake and part of an elaborate plot by Angela and Ian Diaz to frame Hadley. Angela had also faked her pregnancy and claimed to have cervical cancer, even forging doctor’s notes, according to People.
But, at least initially, the scheme worked.
Hadley was served a restraining order on June 6, but Angela alleged Hadley continued to stalk her. Police first arrested Hadley on June 24, and she was released the following day on $100,000 bail. Then, on July 14, believing “a serious threat to public safety existed,” a warrant was issued for Hadley. The felony counts included “stalking with a restraining order, stalking, criminal threats, attempted rape, assault with the intent to commit rape during a residential burglary, violating a protective order, and a crime-bail-crime enhancement,” carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison.
According to the aforementioned court filings, Hadley was incarcerated in the Orange County Central Women’s Jail and assigned to a high-security unit because of the sexual nature of her alleged crimes. She later claimed she suffered “numerous indignities of incarceration, including harassment, cavity searches, and mistreatment and abuses from guards and other inmates.”
How Was Michelle Hadley Exonerated and Released?
Hadley spent around three months in prison, maintaining her innocence throughout. She was released with an ankle monitor following her alleged participation in a sting operation under police supervision. In the meantime, authorities began to notice evidence hinting at her innocence.
Orange County Deputy District Attorney Rick Zimmer said starting in September 2016, the IP addresses linked to emails alleged to be from Hadley actually pointed back to Angela and her condo, according to ABC 7.
Charges against Hadley were dropped in January 2017, and Angela was subsequently accused of 10 felony counts—including two of kidnapping, two of false imprisonment, perjury, two of forgery, two of possession of a forged instrument, and grand theft.
“I wanted to make sure, however, that Ms. Hadley is cleared in every possible way—in the courtroom, in the court of public opinion,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said at the time. “It should be made clear in the media and in cyberspace. Ms. Hadley is an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme.”
Angela, now around 40 years old, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison in October 2017. She is divorced from Ian Diaz, according to NBC News.
Ian, now 48, was arrested in 2021 on federal charges of cyberstalking, conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, and perjury. He was convicted at trial in 2023 and sentenced to 121 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release.
Where Is Michelle Hadley Now?
Hadley, now around 39 years old, filed a lawsuit against the city of Anaheim and its police in 2018. She accepted an undisclosed settlement in April 2021.
Following Ian Diaz’s conviction in March 2023, Hadley provided a statement to NBC News saying the verdict “brought so much peace to my family and restored some of the faith we lost in the justice system.” She also revealed she gave birth to her first child, a daughter, the same day.
“My life has been filled by strange, often symbolic, and sometimes beautiful coincidences like this,” Hadley said. “My daughter represents my rainbow after a very long storm, and my heart has never felt so full.”
More recently, Hadley appeared on an episode of the Investigation Discovery docuseries TOXIC in May 2025, in which she speaks directly to host Elizabeth Chambers.
