Like many of his acclaimed movies, Christopher Nolan created The Odyssey as a cinematic experience — which means it likely won’t be coming to a streaming service anytime soon.
“You make a film like this for a theatrical audience,” he told The Irish Times in July 2026, adding that he didn’t believe at-home viewing spelled the end of the movie theater. “It was all: ‘Theatrical is dead. Everything’s about television and streaming.’ Well, that narrative is completely flipped.”
Nolan continued, “I have seen that the theatrical landscape is booming and theatrical windows are now getting bigger again. And they’re being respected, because studios are seeing the value of it.”
But just because the Academy Award-winning director enjoys making movies for the box office doesn’t mean they’ll stay there forever.
Here’s what to know about when The Odyssey will be available to stream.
How long will The Odyssey be in theaters?
The Odyssey was released in theaters on July 17.
Though Universal Pictures hasn’t announced an official runtime, it typically keeps its films in theaters for a minimum of five weekends, or between 31 and 32 days, per Forbes.
Nolan’s last major motion picture, Oppenheimer, extended its IMAX run by two weeks due to popular demand and returned for a week of showings in November 2023, per the Motion Picture Association.
The Cillian Murphy-led biopic played exclusively in theaters for 123 days before Universal Pictures released it for home entertainment, per Screen Daily.
When will The Odyssey be available to stream?
Universal Pictures hasn’t revealed an official date for when The Odyssey will arrive on premium video-on-demand (PVOD).
If the studio follows a similar window as it did with Oppenheimer, then fans could potentially expect to rent or buy the epic adaptation of Homer’s poem in November 2026.
Even though Nolan’s films eventually make their way to streaming platforms, the director still urged fans to purchase the hard copy over the digital version.
“I’m known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but, the truth is, the way the film goes out at home is equally important,” he told the audience during a November 2023 screening of Oppenheimer, per Variety.
Nolan continued, “And in the case of Oppenheimer, we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version … and trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf.”
Where The Odyssey be available to stream?
Because Universal Pictures is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, Peacock will probably have the first chance to add The Odyssey to its platform after its theatrical and PVOD releases.
Oppenheimer was added to Peacock in February 2024 (though it’s no longer on the platform) as well as several of Nolan’s other films, including Memento, Dunkirk and The Dark Knight Rises.
As of 2026, Memento is the only one of the director’s movies still available to stream on Peacock.
Where can I buy or rent The Odyssey?
When The Odyssey makes its PVOD debut, it will likely be available for rent or purchase on multiple platforms, including Apple TV, YouTube Movies & TV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video.
Its price has not yet been announced, but movies of its caliber typically run between $19.99 and $29.99 to purchase and $14.99 to $24.99 to rent for a 48-hour period.
