The horror renaissance is alive and well!
After the massive success of Obsession and Backrooms, horror fans are in for a treat with Other Mommy. If you were one of the lucky first audiences to watch the cultural phenomenon The Odyssey, then you might’ve been surprised by the trailer for this mysterious new horror movie before the film began.
Universal has been very secretive about the upcoming horror film and deliberately chose to play the official Other Mommy trailer in theaters before officially releasing online.

However, everyone who didn’t get to experience the terrifying teaser in theaters can now be scared like the rest of us. In the trailer, Jessica Chastain stars as the mother of our nightmares. Without giving away any of the scary details, Chastain appears to be a loving mother at the start of the trailer, and quickly becomes… well, not like any mother I’ve ever met!
Chastain plays a mother who comes home to spend time with her daughter on her lunch break. How sweet! However, while Chastain prepares a meal for her daughter, you’ll start to feel your anxiety rise. You quickly realize she isn’t the sweet mother she appeared to be. Without spoiling the opening scare of the trailer, the film establishes that Chastain will plays two role, Ursula (the normal mother) and the Other Mommy.
One thing is certain: the trailer will leave you will many questions. We feel the same way, but here is what we can answer about the mysterious film.
Is Other Mommy based off a book?
Yes, Other Mommy is an adaptation of Josh Malerman’s book, Incidents Around the House, a 2024 horror novel. Malerman is also known for his 2014 novel Bird Box, which was adapted into a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock.
On Bluesky, acclaimed horror author Stephen King called Incidents Around the House a “rare novel that’s authentically scary.”
Other Mommy was directed by Rob Savage (Host, The Boogeyman), and written by Nathan Elston.
Who is in the Other Mommy cast?
Chastain leads the cast playing the dual mother roles. Arabella Olivia Clark will play Bela, her daughter and Jay Duplass will portray Russ, Bela’s father .
While the official roles of the other cast members haven’t been revealed yet, the film’s ensemble includes: Arian Moayed, Sean Kaufman, and Karen Allen.
When does Other Mommy hit theaters?
Other Mommy will be released in theaters on October 9, 2026. Tickets for the movie are not yet on sale.
