Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is getting attention on social media for turning a bizarre question about his wife into a slam on Donald Trump.
The Atlantic published a profile by Mark Leibovich about the senator, who is the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ). Giffords served in Congress until 2012, when she suffered a severe brain injury after being shot in the head during an assassination attempt. She continues to experience severe difficulties with communication, vision, and mobility.

The profile describes Giffords and Kelly as a Democratic political team and “an inspiring couple to be around” and notes that Kelly is a “possible candidate for president.” Leibovich asks Kelly about how he handles hateful comments on social media – “It thickens your skin a little bit,” Kelly said – and then asks a question that’s causing a stir.
“I asked Kelly, straight up, if he thought America was ready to have a disabled first lady,” Leibovich wrote.

On social media, people both praised Kelly’s response and questioned why Leibovich asked the question he asked. Many on the right on X claimed that Joe Biden was “disabled.”
