The late teenager disappeared during a Fourth of July trip before he was found dead just days later.

Nolan Wells‘ death and subsequent investigation have drawn national attention as investigators work to determine what happened to the late 18-year-old Mississippi football player. Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip earlier this summer with friends near Horn Island, Mississippi, before his body was found two days later. Since then, his family has questioned the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and eventually hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump to search for answers.

On July 22, 2026, Wells’ family shared the preliminary findings of an independent autopsy during a press conference. While officials continue their investigation, many questions about Wells’ final hours remain unanswered. Learn more about the case and autopsy findings below.

Who Is Nolan Wells?

Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old graduate of Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi and an incoming college football player.

According to authorities, Wells joined some friends for a boating trip to Horn Island on July 4, 2026. Family members became concerned after learning he never returned home.

His disappearance prompted a widespread search effort involving law enforcement agencies before his body was recovered in waters near the island on July 6, 2026.

What Happened to Nolan Wells? His Case Explained

Investigators have said that Wells disappeared while spending the holiday with friends on Horn Island. Authorities located his body two days later after an extensive search for him commenced.

Although local officials initially stated there was no immediate evidence of foul play, the Wells family has expressed concerns about inconsistencies surrounding the events leading up to his disappearance. Attorney Ben Crump has also pointed to unanswered questions involving the timeline of Well’s disappearance and the delay before he was reported missing. Crump has also referenced reports of a possible altercation that occurred on the boat, but investigators have not publicly confirmed whether it played a role in Wells’ death.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has indicated the investigation is ongoing. Officials have not announced any criminal charges.

Nolan Wells’ Autopsy Results: What His Family & Ben Crump Said

On July 22, 2026, Crump and the Wells family released preliminary findings from an independent autopsy performed by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell.

According to the independent examination, the cause and manner of Nolan Wells’ death could not be determined without further investigation. The report did not identify major fractures or significant external trauma, though it noted red discoloration in soft tissue near the back of Wells’ head.

Dr. Mitchell explained that the body’s advanced decomposition limited what could be determined and prevented him from ruling out several possible scenarios, including foul play. Therefore, several questions are still left unanswered, including whether Wells drowned or had injuries before going in the water.

Toxicology results from the official state autopsy are pending.
