I suppose directors are allowed to make whatever rules they want to on their sets, but I would still like to know what, exactly, Christopher Nolan has against comfy feet. Nolan has banned Uggs, specifically, from his sets, and while his explanation for the embargo does sort of make sense, I am still going to defend the Ugg-wearers.
,In an appearance on The Royal Court, The Odyssey stars Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon ran down some of Nolan’s “commandments” on set. These include no chairs and no playbacks and, according to Hathaway, “Thou shalt not wear Uggs,” which seems harsh. This is not actually the first time this has come up. Emily Blunt, who would often try to wear Ugg boots on the set of Oppenheimer, said to USA Today, “I’ve never known anyone to detest a pair of Uggs more than Chris Nolan.” It became such a thing that she jokingly gave him a pair as a wrap gift.
,While promoting The Odyssey, Nolan explained his abhorrence for the “slippers,” as he calls them, to Gayle King on CBS Mornings. He said that sometimes actors, when their period-accurate footwear hurts, will “turn up in these big, fluffy, comfy slippers.” And even though the actors are also surrounded by a full camera crew, it’s something like Uggs that can “weirdly” take them out of the moment. “There are certain things that just remind you that you’re in the real world as opposed to the world that we’re trying to create for the actors,” Nolan said. “For me, the Ugg boots are a signifier of modernity. Absurd though that is.” He doesn’t just hate Uggs, he insisted. He just hates them on set.
,So, does this mean Nolan has a problem with all comfortable footwear? Does he have the same problem with Birkenstocks? Is his set a no-Croc zone, also? As for the modernity aspect, frankly, it seems perfectly plausible to me that ancient Greeks could have worn sheepskin boots to keep their toesies cozy in the winter, too. So I have to ask: What did Uggs ever do to you, Mr. Nolan?
