Watch: 'Clayface' trailer gives look at DC's first R-rated horror film

"Clayface," a body horror film starring Tom Rhys Harries as the DC Comics villain Clayface, opens in theaters in October. Naomi Ackie also stars.

July 22 (UPI) -- Warner Bros. is introducing the new film Clayface.

The studio shared a trailer for the movie Wednesday featuring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie.

Clayface is a body horror film that tells the origin story of the DC Comics villain Clayface. In this version, Clayface begins as Matt Hagen (Harries), an actor whose face is disfigured in an attack.

Ackie portrays Dr. Caitlin Corr, a scientist who transforms Matt into living clay with horrifying results.

"Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self... but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge," an official synopsis reads.

David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan also star.

Clayface will be the first R-rated horror entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is written by Mike Flanagan (Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini (Drive), directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black), and produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Superman).

The movie opens in theaters Oct. 23.
