The Vanderbilt Commodores have a quarterback competition on their hands following the departure of Diego Pavia.
Pavia finished second in Heisman Trophy voting this past college football season, trailing only Indiana Hoosiers quarterback/No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Fernando Mendoza. He completed an SEC-leading 70.6% of his pass attempts for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns, while also rushing for 862 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
With Pavia off to the NFL as an undrafted rookie for the Baltimore Ravens, Clark Lea and the Commodores are entering a new chapter.
“We won’t replicate Diego,” Lea said during SEC Media Days on Tuesday.
Vanderbilt’s starting quarterback job is ultimately expected to land with five-star freshman Jared Curtis, a Nashville native who flipped his commitment from Georgia to join the Commodores. Pavia actually helped lead the charge to secure a commitment from the highly-touted QB prospect.
“Certainly, we’re excited about Jared. We believe he has the physical tools and mental tools to be a great player in the SEC,” Lea said on Tuesday. “We wouldn’t have recruited him if we didn’t feel that way. We will make that evaluation through training camp and do what’s best for our team when we play Austin Peay.”
Vanderbilt will begin its season with a matchup against Austin Peay on Sept. 5.
