Behind five combined RBIs between Ethan Mauthe (three) and Conner Bergeron (two), the Greenfield Post 81 Legion baseball team defeated Monson Post 241 by a final score of 11-3 to claim the Western Massachusetts District 3A title at Veterans Memorial Field on Wednesday night.
The outcome ensured Greenfield improved to 17-0-2 and will compete in the Massachusetts Senior State baseball Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday in Milford. According to the league, Post 81 will face the District VI champion on the same date from Fino Field at 1 p.m.
“The team got along really well,” Greenfield coach Alex Siano said. “They all wanted to play and wanted to be here this year. Some kids went to college and didn’t get to play high school baseball, and they came back to play one more time with their friends.
“I told the guys it’s going to be different. Legion baseball is different than high school baseball. In high school, you play close to your school size. It doesn’t matter about school size. We could be playing like Franklin, Mass. They have a town of 70,000 people.”

The beginning of Greenfield and Monson’s game started on Tuesday, before inclement weather postponed the game until Wednesday. Theo Haley got Post 241 on the scoreboard first with a run-scoring single in the top of the first.
The momentum was short-lived, though, as Mauthe drove in a run behind one of his three combined hits. But the fun wasn’t over for the home team, as a passed ball scored one and then a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Sam Connors brought in two more to extend Post 81’s cushion to 4-1 through one inning of action.
Following a scoreless top of the second inning, Greenfield’s offense finished where they left off, as they recorded five more runs behind three hits in the bottom half. That was made possible thanks to a two-run single from Bergeron, a two-run triple from Mauthe, and a run-scoring single from Nick Prasol to make it 9-1.
But the offense wasn’t the only bright spot on Wednesday, as Post 81 used five combined pitchers between Tuesday and Wednesday to emerge victorious. Starting pitcher Arthur Fitzpatrick allowed one hit and one run between two combined innings to earn the win for Greenfield, while Evan Tsipenyuk, Bodie Burke, Connors, and Bergeron each threw scoreless innings for Greenfield Post 81 in relief. They also recorded nine combined strikeouts.
Josiel Ortiz and Haley each recorded two combined hits for Monson in a losing effort, while Sebastian Mayberry recorded a team-high six strikeouts as Post 241 finished their season at 8-11. Ortiz, Mayberry, and Haley also drove in all three of their team’s runs in a losing effort between the first and fifth innings.
Greenfield wasn’t the only regional team to clinch a state postseason berth on Wednesday, as Northampton Post 28 defeated Sheffield Post 340 to earn its ninth consecutive win and first legion state championship tournament berth since 2017.
“They are going to be playing against the best baseball players they have played against all year,” Siano said. “They know that. The pitching is going to be better. It’s going to be hard. But we’ll see how good we are and hopefully we can represent ourselves well.”
