From racing a woman to the hospital in labor to escaping an armed confrontation, drivers shared their most unforgettable rides.
When a new passenger steps inside your Uber, there’s no telling what can happen.
“One time I picked up this pregnant lady, and I drove her straight to labor,” Joel, an Uber driver, told Travel + Leisure in the latest episode of “Travel, Unfiltered.” “She gets in the car with her husband, and they’re like, ‘Hey man, my wife is about to give birth. Can you please hurry?’”
Another driver, Dwayne, told us about the time a woman ran out of a house and silently jumped into his car. “A black car pulled up right next to me,” he said. “The guy got out the back of that car, tapped on my window, and pointed to the gun. I said, ‘Do you know them?’ She said, ‘No. Run.’ I did Dukes of Hazard. I got up on the sidewalk. We took off. All they saw was smoke.”
Some situations aren’t quite so hair-raising. “I picked up this guy and two girls,” Joel told T+L. At one point, all three of them were kissing in the backseat. Another driver, Jeff, told T+L about the time a bachelorette party got into his car and tried to get him to do a shot of breast milk. “They’re like, what if we gave you a $5 tip? I’m like, still gonna be, no.”
Jeff also had one passenger mistake him for a moving company. That passenger “proceeded to move his entire home into the back of my van,” Jeff said. “He was so relaxed and comfortable treating me like a moving van. He was taking breaks to sip on his Big Gulp. It took him 22 minutes, I think, to load my minivan.”
Some drivers set curfews for themselves to keep crazy stories from unfolding in their back seats. Others, like Mimi, refuse rides that feel like red flags. Mimi said one customer had a picture of a scary clown in his profile and his name listed as MURDER, in all caps. “I was like, no, I think I’m not gonna welcome that into my car,” she said.
Uber drivers also hear everything. “You hear people talk about people cheating on each other, wives taking people’s money, people’s money problems, when they’re going from one boyfriend to the other boyfriend, we know it all,” Joel said.
Jeff says he tries to keep an ear on the conversation just in case it comes in handy for the future. “I’m still convinced that my eavesdropping will someday help me solve crime. So I try to listen to everything,” he said.
