President Donald Trump wildly claimed on Wednesday that several fallen service members killed in the ongoing war with Iran had “said very strongly, ‘We can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon.'”
The remark came as Trump headed to Dover Air Force Base to attend the dignified transfer of Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad; 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan; Pvt. Isabella Gonzales; and Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton.
Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas; and Rampersad, 28, of Queens, New York, died in an Iranian missile strike on Friday at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.
Swinton, 30, of North Carolina, was killed in Iraq on Saturday during a “controlled detonation of an Iranian drone.”
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews before heading to Dover, Trump praised the fallen troops.
“We’re going to Dover — some of you are going with us to honor our heroes, and they are indeed great heroes, actually.”
He then added the bizarre aside:
They said, and all of them said very strongly, “We can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon. They won’t have a nuclear weapon.” So we’re going to honor them, and one of the hardest things to do — for me, it’s one of the hardest things to do as a president — but has to be done.
In the Oval Office a day earlier, Trump said American forces are degrading Iran “at levels that nobody thought was possible.”
He added, “They are being degraded really so seriously. They did slip something through in Jordan.”
He then proceeded to blame the attack on “other operators” in Jordan, saying, “We’ve stopped almost everything, but when you let other people do your job with the United States, we let other people do the job. And sometimes it doesn’t work out so well.”
