Charlamagne Tha God was shocked to learn New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) doesn’t have the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On Wednesday’s The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne said Mamdani “got” him, because he assumed the mayor had the right to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu while the Israeli prime minister visits New York.
Mamdani walked back his pledge to arrest Netanyahu in a video posted to social media this week, where he admitted he does not have the legal authority to arrest Israel’s leader after “active” talks with law enforcement officials.
The Big Apple mayor called on federal authorities to enforce the warrant, but the administration has dismissed calls for Netanyahu’s arrest as a “publicity stunt.”
“But why is it a publicity stunt if there’s actually an international arrest warrant? Like, there’s actually an international arrest warrant and there’s an elected official who wants to enforce that, what’s the problem? Isn’t that the law? What am I missing here?” Charlamagne asked.
He was then informed only federal officials could enforce the warrant, which Mamdani noted in his video.
“It’s a damn good publicity stunt because he got me. I was like, damn, he’s trying to enforce the like that? You said you want to arrest Bibi?” Charlamagne said, adding, “I thought he had the power to do it especially if he came to New York.”
The radio host continued, “Listen, he got me. I didn’t know. Wow.”
Mamdani declared in his video that Netanyahu “is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large.” He accused Netanyahu of being the “architect” of a “horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” referring to Israel’s strikes on Gaza, which have led to thousands of civilian deaths.
The ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu, issued in 2024, accuses him of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the war in Gaza.
