President Donald Trump is demanding reporting that the death toll from the Iran war is nowhere near as bad as previous conflicts like the Iraq War and Vietnam, and he has a chart to prove it.
The president posted a graphic on Tuesday evening that favorably compared Operation Epic Fury and the “Venezuela War” to a handful of other conflicts since World War II.
Trump’s graphic showed the Iran War has so far gone on for four months and led to 18 American troop deaths, while the mission that plucked Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro from his bed earlier this year lasted one day and had zero deaths.
He filed those under a column that read “Trump,” with the other side of the graphic saying “Other Presidents.”
The duration and death toll from several wars was listed, including the 19-year long Vietnam War and its 58,220 deaths; Korea (3 years, 36,574 deaths), Iraq (9 years, 4,600 deaths), and the Afghanistan War (20 years, 2,000 deaths) were also included.
“These are the real facts. REPORT THEM!” Trump captioned the post.
The death toll on his graphic for the Vietnam War and Korean War match figures posted by the Defense Department, while the government has the Iraq War death toll listed a bit lower (4,418 troops killed); the Defense Department has the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan at 2,350, which is a few hundred more than on Trump’s graphic.
Trump’s post followed the news that three American service members were killed in an Iranian strike on a military base in Jordan on July 17. Trump said the deaths were “very sad” but said the troops died “in service” to the USA; the military has continued to strike Iran over the last several days in response.
The president got into a heated back-and-forth with ABC News correspondent Mary Bruce over the war during a Tuesday press conference at the White House.
“Mr. President, there are no signs that Iran is ready to stop fighting, so what is the plan? Is the plan to just keep fighting until they give up?” Bruce asked.
“How would you know there are no signs?” Trump shot back. “Why, do you know something that I don’t know?”
‘Well, they continue to attack our allies and kill Americans—” Bruce started to respond, before Trump cut her off.
“You don’t know what the dialogue is behind the scenes. They want to meet desperately to try and end it, because they’re getting decimated. You don’t get that when you’re listening to your fake station, but you don’t know anything.”
