US President Donald Trump said the proposed civil nuclear agreement between Washington and Saudi Arabia will move forward only if the kingdom joins the Abraham Accords. In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said the agreement, which covers only civilian nuclear activities, would not permit the enrichment of nuclear material.
"The Civil Nuclear Deal... will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords," Trump wrote, adding that the US supports civilian nuclear facilities that do not involve uranium enrichment.
Trump's remarks come after the US and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement on civil nuclear cooperation that would allow the kingdom to develop nuclear reactors using US technology and enrich uranium, without requiring the snap UN inspections Washington has previously insisted on for Iran.
Saudi Arabia has long maintained that it will not join the Abraham Accords, the US-brokered normalisation agreements with Israel, unless there is a clear roadmap towards the establishment of a Palestinian state.
