A US aerospace startup has taken a massive step toward revolutionizing air travel by starting development of a blended-wing passenger aircraft that promises up to 50 percent lower fuel burn.

The new aircraft is being showcased at the Farnborough International Airshow in Hampshire, UK, taking place from July 20 to 24. It is set to become the world’s first commercial blended wing body (BWB) airliner.

Designed by California-based JetZero, the Z4 will enter commercial service in the early 2030s. Built to carry about 250 passengers, it could cut fuel consumption by up to 50 percent while flying as far as 5,000 nautical miles (nm).

The Z4 merges the wings and fuselage into a single lifting surface. It improves its aerodynamic efficiency without requiring changes to airport infrastructure. Japan Airlines (JAL) has already joined the program to help refine its commercial design, operations and maintenance.

Airline input matters

As part of the partnership, JAL will help JetZero design and prepare the aircraft for operations. The two companies will also jointly evaluate airport gate operations and ground handling procedures for the Z4.

They will moreover explore a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) framework to support airlines after the aircraft enters service. JAL underscored that it values JetZero’s decision to involve airlines early in the development process. This will give airlines a chance to shape the design before certification.

“Collaborating with JetZero on the Z4 aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainable innovation and net-zero emissions by 2050,” Takao Suzuki, JAL’s corporate strategy executive officer, pointed out. “By integrating our operational expertise into the Z4’s development, we look forward to contributing to a new era of efficient air travel.”

JetZero plans to continue developing the aircraft with the goal of entering service in the early 2030s. The company noted that it intends to remain closely involved throughout the certification and development process.

New aircraft design

According to the US startup, the blended wing body design generates lift across the aircraft’s entire wingspan. This, in turn, significantly reduces drag and slashes fuel consumption. The firm believes that the aircraft could improve fuel efficiency by 30 to 50 percent compared with commercial airlines currently in service.

Besides reducing emissions, the lower fuel burn could also help airlines cut one of their biggest operating expenses. The jet has a range of about 5,000 nautical miles (5,750 miles). It is designed to carry around 250 passengers on medium- and long-haul flights.

“JetZero’s goal of bringing the Z4 to market in the early 2030s aligns perfectly with JAL’s Vision 2035,” Tom O’Leary, JetZero CEO and co-founder, said in a press release. “JAL is growing their network sustainably while delivering a superior customer experience.

Despite its unconventional appearance, the Z4 is being engineered to fit within today’s airport gates and taxiways. The firm also noted that the aircraft’s layout could improve boarding efficiency while providing a more spacious cabin for passengers and crew.

O’Leary is certain that the Z4 could provide a new option for future fleets. “We look forward to deepening our relationship with JAL to help serve their needs,” he concluded.
