A federal judge in Florida ruled that Donald Trump must provide detailed information about his companies’ finances in response to a motion filed by the BBC in the president’s $10 billion lawsuit against the U.K. broadcaster.
The judge’s Tuesday ruling could mean that the president’s lawsuit against the BBC ends up backfiring as a major media organization may be set to obtain new, previously nonpublic information about the Trump Organization or the president’s associated ventures, including his cryptocurrency empire.
Trump filed his lawsuit in late 2025, claiming that BBC journalists deceptively edited together portions of his speech to protesters on January 6, 2021, to make it look like he encouraged them to storm the Capitol. The president claimed that the 2024 Panorama documentary at the heart of the suit cost his various businesses reputational damage.
First reported by Politico, the ruling will likely be appealed by the Trump legal team. But if it holds, the decision will open the door to discovery motions targeting the financial data of roughly 400 companies and business interests controlled by the Trump family’s blind trust, according to the news outlet.
“All of President Trump’s brand, properties, and businesses are impugned or said to have been impugned,” said U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett, according to Politico. “Reputational, economic damages—all of that is now at issue in this case.”
Should the ruling hold, it wouldn’t be the first time Trumpworld has been burned by the discovery process of a defamation suit. The situation draws clear parallels to the lawsuit filed against Fox News in the wake of the 2020 presidential election by voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems, as the discovery process of the Dominion suit did clear reputational damage to Fox News when it revealed that Fox personalities were knowingly elevating narratives they knew were untrue and Trump campaign officials/supporters who were spreading clear falsehoods.
The financial wellbeing of Trump’s various companies is of great interest to media companies, the BBC included, as journalists seek to understand the sheer scope of the profits the Trump family is making under his second presidency.
In a New York Times interview in January, the president directly asserted that his family had dropped its pledge to abstain from seeking foreign investments or financial arrangements after he claimed he’d received insufficient credit from the media for doing so during his first term.
“I found out that nobody cared [about his companies’ foreign dealings], Trump told the Times. “I let my kids, you know, do business [now]. I prohibited them from doing business in my first term, and I got absolutely no credit for it.”
With less than half of his second presidency under his belt, Trump’s financial interests have already benefited enormously. His cryptocurrency venture alone netted his family $1.4 billion in revenue, even as retail investors in the Trump coin and World Liberty Financial tokens experienced major losses.
The scale of those profits could make it difficult for the Trump Organization to prove financial hardship was incurred by the BBC’s documentary. Trump went on to win the presidential election that year by a larger share of electoral votes than his 2016 victory, and his various financial interests’ total revenues for 2025 were a staggering $2 billion, a sum that towers over what he made during his first presidency or the year prior, according to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which noted that his companies’ foreign revenues also increased over 2023-2024.
In the documentary, the BBC edited together two clips of Trump speaking on January 6, 2021. In the first one, he urges supporters to march down to the U.S. Capitol, across downtown Washington D.C.; in the second, he urges them to “fight like hell!”
The BBC issued an apology to the president in November of 2025, with a spokesperson acknowledging that the footage’s edits created "the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action."
