(NewsNation) — The race for artificial intelligence is heating up, and new reporting suggests the Trump administration is considering a move that could ban cutting-edge Chinese AI models.
Axios reports United States officials have looked at ways to limit foreign open-source AI models, a step that could give American companies like Anthropic and OpenAI enormous influence over the marketplace.
President Donald Trump has said maintaining U.S. dominance in AI is a national priority, warning that America cannot allow rival nations to control the technology shaping the future.
“Our children will not live in a planet controlled by the algorithms of the adversaries advancing values and interests contrary to our own,” Trump said at an AI summit this time last year.
US eyes AI restrictions
The issue has gained renewed attention following the sudden rise of China’s new model, Kimi.
Axios reports the Trump administration previously considered adding several Chinese AI labs to the Commerce Department’s “Entity List,” which could restrict their ability to use U.S. technology without government approval.
At the same time, the administration is pushing to bring more artificial intelligence into the military, including testing AI-powered weapons systems designed to identify and attack targets with much less human involvement.
China counters with AI growth
China is also making a major push to become a global AI leader. Chinese President Xi Jinping used a recent AI conference to position Beijing as a driving force behind a new global artificial ecosystem.
“China has embraced AI with open arms,” Xi said, highlighting Beijing’s efforts to expand AI innovation, smart manufacturing and the country’s digital economy.
