CLEVELAND — A tornado touched down in the Youngstown area Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday after surveying the damage.

The EF0 tornado produced winds reaching 85 mph and traveled 6.18 miles through Trumbull and Mahoning counties before continuing into Pennsylvania. It remained on the ground for about 16 minutes, reached a maximum width of 100 yards and caused no injuries or deaths.

It was the second tornado to strike Mahoning County this month, marking the first time since 1991 that the county has recorded two tornadoes in the same year. An EF1 tornado with winds reaching 95 mph touched down in Canfield Township on July 5.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale rates tornadoes from EF0 to EF5 based on the damage they cause. EF0 corresponds to estimated winds of 65 to 85 mph, while EF1 corresponds to 86 to 110 mph.

The tornado was captured on video from several angles. WKBN Channel 27 recorded the touchdown around 6:40 p.m., while WFMJ Channel 21 obtained footage from residents and first responders as it moved through the area.

Where the tornado caused damage

The tornado formed in southeastern Liberty Township near U.S. 62 and Logan Gate Road, where it snapped several tree branches, according to the weather service.

It continued southeast along Applegate Road into Hubbard, damaging more trees and causing minor roof damage to a home. Winds were estimated at 85 mph in that area.

Dozens of trees were damaged farther southeast as the tornado crossed into Mahoning County and the Youngstown city limits. In the McGuffey Heights neighborhood, tree damage extended from the area of Jacobs Road and Orrin Avenue southeast toward Gerwig Avenue.

The tornado caused additional tree damage near state Route 616 and McGuffey Road, where it also flipped a wagon that was attached to a heavier trailer.

After causing more tree damage near North Hubbard and Johnson roads, the tornado strengthened again along Wilson Lane. Large branches were snapped in a concentrated area, causing minor damage to a home.

Several trees were uprooted along Oak Street before the tornado crossed the Pennsylvania state line north of U.S. 422.

The weather service’s Pittsburgh office confirmed to WFMJ Channel 21 that the tornado continued into Lawrence County, where it damaged trees and caused minor roof damage to a home along Evergreen Road south of U.S. 422.

Tuesday’s storms also knocked out power to more than 5,000 customers in Mahoning County at their peak, according to WFMJ Channel 21. Most service had been restored by early Wednesday.

The weather service said its findings remain preliminary and could change following a final review.
