Timothy Olyphant's new thriller has officially ended a streak.
Olyphant's career went from indie films to big-budget blockbusters and iconic roles on television. The actor had early roles in Scream 2 and The Girl Next Door, and later became known as Sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood and U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified. He has since starred in Santa Clarita Diet, Alien: Earth, Hitman, and The Mandalorian. Now, a new Apple TV series has ended a largely impressive Rotten Tomatoes streak for the actor.
Apple TV's new thriller Luckyhas officially been released, and its Rotten Tomatoes audience rating is lacking the star power that this series brings. Unfortunately for Olyphant, the series debuted with a less-than-impressive 57% rating based on over 50 reviews. The series stars Matthew Rauch, Anya Taylor-Joy, Olyphant, Annette Bening, Clifton Collins Jr., and Steve Olson. Lucky is a con artist who is forced to go on the run and is pursued by the FBI and a ruthless crime boss after a multi-million dollar heist goes wrong.
Audience reviews were certainly not impressed by the latest thriller, with some stating that Lucky is "clichéd and predictable," as well as "Not particularly interesting, captivating, or entertaining." This is the lowest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes for Olyphant in three years, with the other lowest rating being for Justified: City Primeval which has a rating of 46% from audiences. Critics had a different opinion and gave a rating of 79%, stating that "Lucky is a tour-de-force," and "the most enjoyable entries in the genre in recent memory."
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Lauren Neustadter, Cassie Pappas, Jonathan Tropper and Annette Bening discussed the future of Lucky, and stated that it is "definitely a limited series." Unfortunately, Lucky will not likely be returning for a second season, which showrunner Tropper states that was always the intention by adding "we really wanted to make this a closed-ended story," but made sure to add "never say never."
Olyphant has been booked and busy of late with two other releases this year, including The Five Star Weekend and Mating Season. They have both achieved impressive ratings of 70% and 74% from audiences. The actor will be returning to screens soon with more releases including Beef, a new season of Alien: Earth, an untitled Cliff Booth movie, and Stick.
