Dutton Ranch season 2 already has a filming month set.
Series star Ed Harris has revealed the filming start month for the Yellowstone sequel series following a bombshell about his feelings toward his character being "inconsequential." Dutton Ranch season 1 laid the foundation for the sequel series, with Beth and Rip beginning their new lives on a ranch in West Texas. The nine-episode season became an instant hit for Paramount+, the show quickly getting renewed for season 2 ahead of season 1's finale. However, it was later reported filming won't start until 2027.
Speaking with Variety, Harris, who stars as Vietnam vet and local veterinarian Everett McKinney, revealed Dutton Ranch season 2 will begin filming in February 2027. He dropped the information while speaking to press about his character feeling "inconsequential" to the larger narrative of season 1, despite having been promised to be the fourth most-important character in the series when he was offered a role in the show. The actor isn't certain how big his role will be going forward, but expressed frustration at the idea of it remaining small in the upcoming episodes.
Dutton Ranch season 1 ended with a number of cliffhanger moments for its core characters, with a number of shocking twists that laid the groundwork for an intense follow-up. This includes the disbandment of the 10-Petals crime group, as well as Mariano kidnapping Carter to hold him over Beth and Rip's head. While Everett was involved in these storylines, he hasn't been as active as the fourth-most important character thus far. Whether this will change in season 2 remains to be seen, but could be another important direction for the story to go.
So far, it's unclear what's going to happen in Dutton Ranch season 2, other than Beth and Rip going to war with Mariano while trying to save Carter. However, the show clearly has a long-term plan that's going to define what happens next. Given filming isn't expected to begin until February 2027, it seems like the show might not return until late 2027 at the earliest, depending on how long production takes. For now, there's no other information about what to anticipate from the series.
Dutton Ranch is one of two ongoing Yellowstone sequel series, the other being Marshals on CBS, following Kayce Dutton working for the US Marshals. There are plans for even more expansion of the franchise in the future, including another prequel series titled 1944 and the spinoff 6666 about the Four Sixes Ranch. Taylor Sheridan continues to be involved in the franchise as an executive producer on its shows, continuing to steer it in a direction that befits the characters that he created.
Although the exact story elements of season 2 remain up in the air, the show seems destined to continue succeeding no matter when it comes back. The filming start window is a good sign for more news in 2027, even if there's going to be a lull period the rest of the year. Dutton Ranch seems destined for success either way, as its popularity on Paramount+ is bound to continue.
