New Delhi police forcibly moved Sonam Wangchuk to hospital on July 18 over health concerns after a 20-day hunger strike protesting flaws in India's examination system, but social media posts claiming American news magazine Time featured the climate activist on its cover are false. N o such issue exists , and the creator of the image confirmed to AFP he used artificial intelligence to make the visual to express support for Wangchuk.
"World renowned TIME magazine has shown its support for Sonam Wangchuk by featuring this picture on its cover page," reads a Hindi-language X post sharing an image of the supposed cover on July 15, 2026.
The purported issue dated July 2026 shows Wangchuk in an hourglass with sand slipping away. Text under the magazine's name -- Time -- reads: "is running out".
The same image accumulated tens of thousands of interactions in posts sharing similar claims as students mobilised under the banner of the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) -- a play on the name of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ( archived link ).
The movement's primary demand is the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whom they blame for repeated failures in the education system, particularly in the conduct of India's medical entrance examination.
Wangchuk and several members of the All India Students' Association carried out a hunger strike at the Jantar Mantar protest site alongside CJP members, who have been demonstrating since June 20 ( archived link ).

The move came two days before thousands of protesters gathered in the heart of the Indian capital in the biggest street rally in Delhi in about five years. Police fired tear gas and baton-charged demonstrators to stop them from marching on parliament, and at least 178 people were injured ( archived link ).
Comments from users applauding international coverage of the protest suggest they believe the purported Time magazine cover is genuine, but it is not.
"This image is not an authentic Time cover," a spokesperson told AFP on July 21.
Time's archive of covers published over the past few months, including that for July 2026 , shows none featuring Wangchuk (archived links here and here ).
The date on the purported cover shared online is another clue that it is fabricated. While the magazine places dates in the top-left corner, the altered image shows it in the top- right .
A reverse image search on Google found the same picture uploaded July 14 on Instagram ( archived link ).
A disclaimer in the caption says it is "an independent conceptual artwork created to raise awareness about a peaceful protest".
Sujan Kudari, the owner of the Instagram account, told AFP he created the image in support of Wangchuk's hunger strike.
"The artwork has no connection or association whatsoever with Time magazine, or with any of its agencies or offices," Kundari told AFP on July 16.
He also said the "artwork" was created using a combination of several design and generative AI tools.
An analysis of the image using Google's SynthID detection tool indicated with "significant" confidence that it was created using the company's AI tools ( archived link ).
