The possibility of Cason Wallace in the Motor City is eerily close to being completely shut down.

The second apron waits for no team, and the summer moves from the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder all but prove that.

For the Detroit Pistons, the opportunity to capitalize on another team's tough decisions could present the chance to snag a young talent that would immediately answer a massive need, while also giving upside to bet on for the future.

One player in particular who stood out as an intriguing talent to keep tabs on is Thunder guard Cason Wallace, whose situation in OKC suggested a fresh start could be on the horizon.

Wallace's comments raised eyebrows following the Thunder's playoff exit. suggesting his priority is to improve his game, rather than sticking around in OKC when asked about his looming extension.

As a former lottery pick, any cracked door is one opposing teams will at least be attempting to stick their foot in, but the Thunder's latest move to offload Lu Dort's contract almost certainly slams the door shut.

Thunder less likely to move Cason Wallace after trading Lu Dort

Sam Presti created something to talk about on Sunday, shipping Dort to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal.

The Thunder moved on from Dort after picking up the two-way guard's $17 million team option earlier this offseason, paving the way for Oklahoma City to work with their former undrafted standout to find him a new team, while allowing him to still land the payday he's earned.

Dort played a major role in the Thunder's success over the last few years, proving to be a reliable 3-and-D player, but with the harsh restrictions the new CBA guidelines offer, OKC had no choice but to shed salary, and the Arizona State product happened to be the odd man out.

Arguably, the biggest reason Dort found himself on the chopping block is the breakout of former lottery pick Cason Wallace, especially in the postseason.

Obviously, Wallace is a player teams around the league would love to add to their roster, but the possibility of that happening now is at an all-time low.

Wallace will likely earn a payday of his own moving forward. With Dort out of the picture, the Kentucky alum has the chance to take on an even larger role and remain in a winning situation, putting an end to any possibility that he could explore a fresh start.

Of course, the Thunder still have plenty of backcourt depth that could lead to someone being shaken loose, with names like Wallace, Ajay Mitchell, Jared McCain, and even rookie Bennett Stirtz coming to mind.

With the upside on the defensive end from Wallace, though, it feels like of the above names, keeping the 22-year-old around will be a priority.

All that to say, any dream the Pistons had of adding the two-way playmaker to J.B. Bickerstaff's squad took a significant hit when Dort was shipped off to Atlanta.
