Trey Murphy III has been involved in NBA trade rumors throughout the offseason. Despite a high asking price from the New Orleans Pelicans, Murphy continues to circulate as an option for teams this summer. However, what is the latest on the Pelicans forward as the NBA waits for LeBron James to make a decision?

The chatter of Murphy being traded from New Orleans hasn’t vanished and is one of many moves that could resurface once James signs with his next team, as reported by The Athletic’s John Hollinger. The 26-year-old forward is one of the hottest players on the NBA trade market, but nothing has come to frution yet.

So, which teams would make the most sense for Murphy moving forward?

If the Pelicans decide to trade Murphy, they will likely get a massive package. Murphy projects as an elite piece to a contending NBA organization with his strong scoring ability and elite defense. Therefore, which NBA teams should pursue the Pelicans forward throughout the rest of the offseason?

The Boston Celtics might be the best landing spot for Murphy. After losing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo, Boston traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and draft picks. The Celtics would be able to use the extra draft capital to acquire Murphy, forming a very strong lineup for the upcoming season.

What about the Golden State Warriors? If the Warriors don’t land James, they could turn their attention toward Murphy. With Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry coming back, the team is looking for one more push to the NBA Finals. The 26-year-old forward would be an elite addition to the team’s offense and defense.

Finally, the Detroit Pistons could be an interesting destination for Murphy. The organization entered the 2026 NBA Playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, but didn’t live up to the expectations. Trading for Murphy would be a major step in the right direction. A deep playoff run should be the goal next year.

There are no guarantees that New Orleans will trade Murphy; however, once James finds a new team, don’t be surprised to see the rumors pick up again.
